Default Items missing after TSA inspection...What to do...

Flew back form a work assignment in Mexico yesterday.

I had to grab my bags in Houston and re-check them for my flight to Calgary.

When I got home I noticed the front storage pocket was partially open and all the items inside were missing.

Opened up the bag to see one of those TSA notices that they opened your bag for secondary inspection.

The missing items weren't valuable but I am still pissed. It was still my stuff.

After having a bag lost on my last trip I might be a bit on edge as well.

Anyone else have this happen ?

I routinely have stuff missing when flying to and from Mexico, especially from exterior pockets. So I wonder if it's the standard Mexican airport tax, or the TSA. I'd be surprised if it was the TSA.

could try to make a claim against the tSA; however, i am sure it would take a long time to process, and i would then assume that i would be flagged forever in "the system".

i'd avoid leaving stuff in outside pockets wherever possible

Goods tend to vanish when crossing into or out of Mexico and there's not a lot you can do about it. We made the mistake of sending some $$$ exotic metal parts via Fed-Ex to a customer in mexico only for customs to inspect it and all the parts just vanish with an empty container being delivered to the customer. We now send any goods destined to Mexico to a special broker in Houston that ensures the goods make it to their destination and policy is now to never direct ship anything to that country.

First step is to contact the TSA lost and found for the airport:
https://www.tsa.gov/contact/lost-and-found

If they don't have your stuff file a claim:
https://www.tsa.gov/travel/passenger-support/claims

As noted it could take up to 6 months for them to process your claim.

Are you sure the items were in your bag when you picked it up in Houston?

We were in Mexico years ago for a wedding with about 20 others. Most of us were told that our bags were too heavy and we had to pay. Several of us knew our bags were well under the weight limit as we had weighed them. No one out up much fuss as it’s not worth it. It’s a Mexico “tax.”

I had my prescription medication stolen from an exterior pocket of my luggage when I traveled before. I couldn't figure out anything to do about it unfortunately, so I would love to know if you figure anything out.

The airline was completely dismissive about.

We filed a claim through WestJet for a stolen SurfacePro, and they issued us a flight credit.

If not the TSA, I wonder if you could potentially file with the airline and/or your travel insurance/credit card to replace the lost items.

EDIT: On a future note, I started using small carabiner clips or S clips to keep zippers closed when I travel. I started mainly on my backpack where the zipper sometimes opened on its own due to the flexing of the back pack, but I started doing this when the airports stopped allowing the locking of luggage.

Something like this:

or this:

I assume it was the TSA because there was the inspection sticker / notice in the bag when I got home.

I did not notice the side pocket being open when I re-checked in Houston. It was half open when I got to Calgary.

Not much in there worth putting in a claim for. Just annoying is all.

Will definetly leave it empty in the future.

Our theft occurred when we went to Anaheim to watch the Flames choke in the playoffs. John Wayne airport. On our way home, we had to go through secondary inspection in Vancouver. We got the guy with the accent, who loves to hear himself talk on the border services show on TV.

He is going through my bag, and points out that we had a TSA notice in there showing my bag had already been looked at in Anaheim. I was so distracted, that I didn't even realize the tablet was already gone. The bag was locked, but that means nothing.

My wife, of course lectured me on putting the tablet in check-in, but I HATE carrying too much on carry on, and frankly, I hated that SurfacePro. Some WestJetters told me that airport was common for theft. It was nice to exchange for some tickets to Hawaii instead.

Why are you travelling with your prescription medication in your luggage instead of with you personally?

What happens if your bag is lost?

Honestly, I was afraid of it causing an issue at security and thought it would be less of a hassle to pack them.

The jerks once got into my Maple Syrup.

Travelling out of Hawaii I didn’t want to waste the remaining half of my 1L Costco Maple Syrup so put it inside a large zip lock bag inside my luggage. When I arrived home there was a note in my luggage and the zip lock was now sticky and full of maple syrup.

Maybe the Maple Syrup was suspicious but I’m guessing my bag was inspected by a fatty who couldn’t resist the delicious sweetness.

Nope, any prescription in its bottle with the prescribing doctors name, put in those plastic bags, should not cause a problem.
