It is pretty crazy to read the first 10 or so pages of this thread. Definitely the biggest Flames “hockey trade” since the Phaneuf deal

Having said that, I wonder how much of that leverage is reduced by the Flames participation in pre-season games in China this year. I would think that players look at this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and would think that for Hanifin missing this training camp is not like missing any other.

Agreed.
I could see both sides seeing that as a pressure point. Like I said, I really don't think Hanifin wants to sit out and I suspect would be anxious to go to China. Management doesn't want him to miss it either. Thats why I figure it gets done within the month.

Really this preseason is extremely important. Would be good to see it done and have hanifin here for the "captain skates" prior to camp starting. So much change over this year. Some bonding and early familiarity will be key to getting off on the right foot.

Do you think players look forward to these overseas pre-season trips? I'd guess most see it as an irksome obligation to the league that disrupts their normal training routines and takes them away from their families. They aren't sight-seeing tours - teams typically fly over the day before their first game, and fly home immediately after the second.

I wonder the same.

Certainly not every player would relish the opportunity, but who can say how most would respond? On the contrary, I think players would value these trips not necessarily as sightseeing adventures, but as excellent opportunities for distraction-free team bonding. It is like an extended road trip during training camp, and given how teams who play overseas in the pre-season tend to perform once the season starts it seems that these are consistently very positive experiences.

Hanifin is new to the team. I suspect that he feels some urgency to both make a great first impression, and to be part of a "team-only" experience.

Well, some players no doubt look forward to it and others, not so much.

Regardless though, the core of the team is heading over, which makes this year's training camp different than most. As a new guy to the team especially, you want to be on that plane and part of that trip because it may be the difference between getting off to a strong start for the season or not.

Also I'm pretty sure they won't be flying to China the day before their first game.

Be nice to have it done soon.

I was just going to post this. Going down same road as Bennett it looks like. Check back right before camp opens.

Nope, the Canucks arrived Monday afternoon for a Thursday and a Sunday game. "Apart from practising and playing, the Canucks will also get to play tourist, with a trip to the Great Wall of China among the planned outings."

If they stayed one extra day after they would have a couple of free days for some pretty cool team bonding.

I agree the married guys with kids like Gio and Smith might consider it a mild annoyance but the younger guys would likely have a blast. Also these guys won't be flying coach.

Good article on Hanifin ... suggesting last season may have been a sign of a player ready to break out.

I think it's a pretty gross exaggeration.

The Leafs need all the help they can get on defense. The Flames are middle of the pack at worst.

^Uppity loner.

God help me. Maybe all that smoke around his personality wasn't just smoke. I hate believing those kind of rumors, but he's not really giving me any reason to not believe it.

Yeah if that's true it's a pretty silly and public over reaction to getting traded.

May not be true though.

Plus from everything ever stated having Monahan on the list makes you wonder as the guy is a teddy bear on skates on and off the ice.

Definitely odd.

I go back to Treliving's comments about not divulging what players share with him. At the time I assumed he was hinting towards Dougie saying he wanted out, but it could also have been some of Dougie's teammates expressing concern about having him on the team.

There has been so much smoke from many different sources that obviously Dougie wasn't a fit with the team for whatever reason. Very odd.
