Nielson, meanwhile, is younger and has some NHL tools. Whether he puts it all together or not is yet to be seen, but it seems to me that Nielson is a far better bet than Klimchuk at this point in their development paths.

Add in the fact that the Leafs are starving for defensemen, and it just seems weird.
Neilson has been the 7/8 defenseman all year for the Marlies, so was never really close at all to helping the big team there

To me this is just an AHL deal. We have several injuries on D and Stockton needs help. I don't think he has any NHL promise at this point. I'd love to be wrong though

^ They did get two years younger in the deal but yeah it would seem unlikely that a3rd year pro who is having a hard time cracking an AHL roster wil amount to much in the NHL.

Fun fact: with the acquisition of Nielson, the Flames now own 4 of the first 22 defensemen taken in the 2015 draft (1st, 17th, 20th, and 22nd).

Maybe it's another Kulak situation, Nielsen wanting an opportunity elsewhere and Toronto doing him a favor.

I read another comment about how the Flames weren't necessarily wanting to move Klimchuk but traded him out of necessity for needing another warm body on defense.

I still think Klimchuk is going to have an NHL career as a two way bottom 6 guy. Wish him all the best

Yes, it's an AHL deal. But it is not at all uncommon for big, young defensemen to struggle for a while to find their game.

But I think that Nielson has a better chance of becoming an NHLer than Klimchuk does. And not only that, but if it happens (for both of them), he is more likely to be an impactful player.

But yes, very low chance for both.

Bourne, a former Marlies coach, didn't have great things to say about Nielsen in the Athletic today. Highlighted a sub-par work-ethic in contrast to his peers; he has been surpassed as a result

I hope that Instagram video was in slow motion, cause that footwork was very slow. Hopefully he was just taking it easy.

Pretty much every Leafs fan I had the stomach to tolerate has commented on his ass-tastic skating.
