The excitement of the Raiders being featured on ESPN Hard Knocks followed by the disappointment that the only way I can watch it is with a DAZN subscription. Does the NFL hate Canadians? I just don't understand why they did this to us.

I got no issue with paying a subscription as I pay for Sunday Ticket which is more than DAZN. I do have a problem with paying a subscription for a substandard product. At the very least typical DAZN 25 fps @ 480p will suffice for Hard Knocks better than games.

I think it's less to do with money for the NFL and more they are using Canada as a test market as it's been talked about that DAZN has made a push for US rights as well. I can't ever see that happening based on their current inability to provide a reliable service for Canada's small population.

Oh I totally get what you're saying. I'm just responding to your "why does the NFL hate Canada?" comment. They don't hate us, they just love money more. I also found that when I watched DAZN through the PS4 app last year that I was pretty consistently getting 720p. Still not as good as cable but better than using a web browser.

fyp. Hard Knocks has been played out for a few years now, especially since they are forcing teams to do it.

I swear this happens to NFL players more than any other sport.

Washington Redskins running back Adrian Peterson was "trusting the wrong people," his attorney said, and is deep in debt after making nearly $100 million during his NFL career.
Peterson is being sued for failing to repay a $5.2 million loan, The Athletic reported.

I would say it's pretty common in every sport. 2018 article but still pretty crazy that so many athletes could be so bad with their money;

At last look, an estimated 60 percent of former NBA players go broke within five years of departing the league.

Those who come from no money and suddenly have crazy amounts of money are way more likely to go broke. Just look at lottery winners.
You don't hear often that NHL players go broke because its extremely hard to make the NHL without coming from an affluent background.

I'd be curious to see some comparisons between North American athletes from less affluent backgrounds vs. say Soccer stars from developing nations, etc.

Cowboys did something similar releasing Hurns. They waited until the start of training camp to ask the player to take a pay cut and released him when he refused. Maybe their thinking is that keeping them all offseason that they have more leverage to get a pay cut late as his options are limited this time of year.

Absolutely. Not all teams conduct business like this as it's generally not the norm. The Daniels release seems to be something that the old Packers regime would not have likely done. It's probably one of those things players could fight in the next CBA if it's important to have penalties for cutting veteran players right before training camp starts but I don't know if it happens enough for the union to make a big deal about it.

The NFL players really need to get guaranteed contracts. The NFL owners have really excessive leverage over players.

Possibly my favourite part of training camp/preseason, the 2019 "Why Your Team Sucks" series has begun!

I guess, but top players can negotiate big signing bonuses currently which is guaranteed and immediate money. Those would go away for everyone and generally the value of contracts would go down as well if they are guaranteed money and guaranteed term.
Having 53 man rosters doesnt help matters if the 4th string tight end has to be signed to a guaranteed contract at a league minimum for a year.

Problem with guaranteed contracts is that veteran players with gas left in the tank would probably not find work. The league already avoids 30+ players like the plague without guaranteed contracts. There are so many complications of having 53 guaranteed contracts as it would probably lead to elite players making less because the ability to cut players on non-guaranteed contracts is what leads to teams being able to pay their stars.
