Well this is definitely not the best match ever, but this might be the best set ever.

Wonder if Novak gets booed when he wins. Decent shot I think.

Well congrats to Novak, definitely a choke for Roger given that he had two championship points and played them like ass, but Novak showed why he's probably the GOAT, and would be undisputed without that mid-2016 to 2018 career walkabout. But what makes him the GOAT is even with his C game he finds a way. Roger played probably his A- or B+ game and lost. Also shows the determining factor in the GOAT race should be who plays the big points best, and that is unquestionably Novak. In fact Roger is behind Rafa on that front too.

Why? Because they made Roger make one of the worst decisions of his career coming in on championship point against a gassed Novak to inevitably get passed at 8-7, 40-30? Cannot complain about breakers, not only did Roger have a look, he made a fatal error on it too.

I don't like breakers in deciding sets either, should have been like 08 need to break and hold to win.
Either way congratulations to both players hell of a match I felt lucky that I got to witness it.

Super entertaining final. I’d say Roger lost it more than Novak won it but that really doesn’t matter. Novak is a machine and if you miss your chance to kill the game vs him you most likely are gonna lose and he played all 3 tie breaks in the match to perfection as well.
Very hard loss for Fed given that he had 2 championship points on serve and could’ve finished the game off even sooner if he wins one of those first 2 tiebreaks

I tend to agree with the ESPN guys that the reason the quality of the last set was so exceptional was that there was a defined finish line, so they could both lay it all out there knowing they were playing 24 games max. I think without the breaker it would have been much more survivalism tennis instead of going for broke.
And again, Roger had his chance. This wasn't servebots where it was endless holds until someone finally folds. Roger blew it, plain and simple. I realize everyone generally hates Novak, but if the result was the other way no one would complain.

So where does Novak rank amongst the all time greats? As a casual observer I've always believed that Federer was the #1 followed by Nadal. But it seems like Novak will hold all major records when all is said and done...

Roger is the greatest to watch, and has the greatest talent level. Novak is the mental king, which as we saw today overcomes talent. Rafa owns clay more than anyone owns anything in any sport ever. So basically comes down to preference, although I do think Novak is the one.

Ya but you also have to factor in age. A 32 year old roger> 32 year old Novak and would’ve won this match imo. There’s no right answer currently for the GOAT question, Novak is definitely on the right trajectory to make the claim tho.

Roger at 32 would have lost this match in straights. Unless you can make Roger at 32 have the new racquet.

Ah I mean you are probably right, I forgot roger had those lean years in 2013-2014. My point is Roger in his athletic prime was more dominant and more impressive than Novak. Novak very well may catch both him and Rafa in terms of majors but i think it’s a bit disingenuous when you make legacy statements off of what 37 year old roger did vs 32 year old Novak. What Roger is doing at this age is next level unreal.

Novak is in his prime right now and there is absolutely NO competition for him except for the seniors tour. It's a cake walk for him every tourney.
When you have average players like Zverev, Anderson, Thiem, Tsitispas and Nishikori in the top 10 this is prob the worst shape Men's tennis has ever been.
I mean the Women get equal pay to play 3 setters! Might be equal rights but it's prob more due to the shambles men's tennis is in and the women draw better.
