Congratulations to Gio and a big thank you for what he does.
Winning this award should really soften the blow of Iginla getting the C this next season.

Good for him.
I can't help but think that he won this one for essentially all sports, but not the King Clancy.
It's kind of like winning the Hart as a goalie, but not the Vezina.

Big winner here are the high needs schools that will receive the ESPN grant. Great to see the positive impact locally by the Giordanos.

Brilliant.
So how does the selection and recognition for this award work exactly? Did they just randomly sift through the major sports for players with significant community involvement, or did he receive an endorsement of some sort from the Flames or the league? As has been said, it seems surprising that Gio won this as a Canadian on a Canadian team in a sport that's rather secondary in the US.

The ESPYs are on right now on Shaw channel 84 (WABC, maybe Detroit) and again at 9pm on channel five (the Spokane ABC channel).

Great respect for Mark Giordano. Guy had to bust his butt every step along the way in his career, to become a premier player in the NHL. And fine humanitarian on top of it. Every player has to commit to a charity as part of their contract, but so many go far beyond obligations.
