Just saw it. Loved it. The original is one of my favorites.

I had heard rumblings of "anti-feminism" before heading into it. Nudity was gratuitous but I think there was a point behind it. This is a dystopian future. Everything isn't supposed to be hunky dory. With the way porn currently is, and the way VR is going, I can totally see that being a piece of the future.

I saw Blade Runner 2049 this weekend with my wife and I loved it but I can understand why those who've never seen the first Blade Runner or never liked the first Blade Runner film would have a colder reaction to the film. The film was beautifully shot and there is pleasure just from letting the awesome images and production design wash over you. But there were also quite a bit of reliance on plot points from the first film, as well as Villeneuve's fanboy homage to the first film, like bringing back Edward James Olmos and his origami figures and bringing back a CGI'ed Sean Young. But this is as good a sequel as any Blade Runner fan can hope for, I think.

Interesting that people have discussed whether the nudity was gratuitous but nobody mentioned the violence. The violence in this film was certainly more extreme than the first one -- for example, count the number of headshots in this film compared to the first one. I would also argue that the noir aspects in the first film were more, er, noirish than this one. I think the degree of nudity/violence/noir in this sequel is an indication of audience tastes today -- people are used to seeing more sexuality and violence today and what may have been rated R in the US 30 years ago would be rated PG-13 today. Also, there was clearly more effort expended to make "K" more likeable, or more hero-like, than Deckard, who was more morally ambiguous, as most classic noir protagonists are.

Finally saw this one tonight with my wife who had never seen the first one and doesn't necessarily like science fiction. She LOVED this movie. Said it was one of the best movies she's seen in a long time. She normally has good taste IMO.

I can't help but compare it to the original:

The plot was so much better. I don't remember much of the original now, but it seemed pretty straightforward-go out and catch those replicants. It wasn't as complex as this plot, which had so much to do with the character work. The characters were much more fleshed out, and less robotic, even though they would have good reason to seem robotic due to their nature. They had fully developed lives and clear motives. Hard to say that about characters in the first one. At any rate, the plot seemed entirely understandable from everyone's position. Nothing seemed forced or poorly thought out.

Villeneuve is a modern art master. Each shot was breathtakingly crafted, even ones that are supposed to depict dirty parts of this world. I would watch it again with the sound off just to absorb the visuals without distraction.

The soundtrack is overwhelming at times. Amazing, but almost too much to take in at the same time as the visuals. It might be easier to handle at home.

I honestly feel like K/Joe's character is one of those iconic characters that people will be studying for years. The transformations that he goes through, the emotional arc, all of it was depicted effortlessly by Gosling. I especially loved the love story between him and Joi, and the heartbreak that ensued after.

The dystopian nature of the world felt more palatable than the first one. Everyone seems to be getting by in this world, but I never got the sense that anyone was enjoying their life. It seemed like pure survival mode for everyone.

Ok, I feel like I'm gushing now, but it was so much better than what I expected.

Oh, and I honestly don't get the complaints I've been reading above. Everything seemed very well thought out and had a clear purpose. This seems like needlessly nitpicking a great film because it's a sequel to a cult classic.

It was so much better than the original.

One of the best things I've ever seen in a movie theatre. My eyes were glued to the screen. Get rid of Jared Leto and this movie is a masterpiece.
