Yeah fine. I have a whole rant that's really off topic here that I should keep out of this thread.

Ultimately guys like Iverson and Nenshi have had to navigate thru some difficult times. Alberta energy isn't the driver of our economy that it once was, and it likely never will be again. So even if both guys ultimately favor the current conditions over the past conditions...they would have had a much easier job in a more robust economy. Than add in a Global Pandemic that's likely ruffled Alberta and North America more than any other event since the second world war.

I do think both had good intentions when they first got in, but it's always been easy to get stale in politics, and in an environment that changes as drastically as it does today shelf lives are shorter than ever. I don't think either guy is done...but smart politicians know it's a good time to take a break, and gear up to make a run at something bigger 4 years from now.

He's going to run for mayor.

The voters who are sick of City's Hall lack of transparency and overspending will vote Farkas.

The voters who like the socially progressive mandates will vote Gondek.

The voters who fall in-between will vote Davison.

I think chances are good that all the progressive candidates will split the vote, and Farkas will win the day.

^^ Right now the mayoral race is between Gondek and Farkas IMO. Who else — progressive or otherwise — is going to take any meaningful number of votes?

Davison has already filed papers to run as Councillor for Ward 6:

I think now that Nenshi has declared he won't run, we'll see a few more candidates join the race that otherwise wouldn't have bothered.

I wouldn't be surprised if Davison upgraded to the mayor's race...assuming he can technically do that.

What’s the over-under on the number of mayoral candidates (10.5)?

It looks like there are more Farkasy people running for mayor than there are Gondeky.

I still remember our city being so into the election run itself and the craziness of a local mayor candidate taking on an unconventional image (purple reign!) and doing so in a new manner (social media).

When it was all over we were all "Wow, that was a crazy campaign and this purple reign guy is our new mayor!". Then suddenly the news hit Toronto and Vancouver and the tone of the coverage was all "WOOOOWWWWW, the backwards hicks voted in a MUSLIM". The rest of Canada patted us on the back like we were children.

I've read rumblings elsewhere about Gian-Carlo Carra potentially running for mayor. Anyone else hear anything like that or think it's likely?

Only rumbling I ever heard is that he was planning on getting out altogether so I'd be surprised if he ran for anything, but mayor in particular.

GC definitely won't be running for mayor, he's been very clear about that. I highly doubt he's going to run for re-election in Ward 9 either. He can make way more money in the private sector and not have to sit through long, tedious meetings at City Council. Council is likely to have at least ten far right wing conservatives after this election, so why bother? I think the Guidebook controversy has taken the wind out of his sails, as he's worked hard on it and expected it to pass.

Regarding Davison running for mayor, take this post from March 23rd for what it's worth:

This guy has been a terrible rookie councillor - can’t understand why he would think he has any chance running for mayor.

That was just a talking point in the last election that has stuck. Yes, he may be able to manage his detractors better than he does at times, but to that talking point. Nenshi doesn't portray himself as the smartest guy in the room he usually actually is the smartest guy in the room. People don't like that.

He was a great mayor and has done more for this City than most of us could ever dream of doing.

I've always viewed Davison as the guy who can be bought and paid for by corporate interests. The way he was talking about the Flames side during the arena negotiations was really off-putting for a publicly-elected official. Sounded like a PR man for them.

He may try and positions himself as the "guy in the middle" but I would hazard to guess Gondek is no more left than he is, and both are somewhat to the left of Farkas on fiscal management of public funds. Both would probably be slightly right-of-center.

My guess is Davison would just syphon votes off of both of them.

In somewhat related news, former Liberal cabinet minister Amarjeet Sohi said on CTV this morning he is seriously considering a run at Mayor of Edmonton.

Given his profile and good standing in the city, as well as the current pool of mayoral candidates, I would expect he would win with a wide majority - and more importantly, most certainly punt Mike Nickel into the sun.

I would never have voted for him at the federal level but would in a heartbeat if if meant booting a candidate like Nickel to the curb.
