I was talking to a couple of home builders this weekend on building a place. Both places had about 950 sqft basements and they quoted between 40 to 45 to finish complete with bedroom, open area, and washroom. The one also had a wet bar. Not sure if it is different if you are just doing a basement not included in a full build but both builders also said the $45 would be high side of things.

I just spent 48k on 811 sqft through a builder. Outside of a 10k wet bar the basement is pretty standard (bedroom, full bath, kids play area, media area). high-end carpet and lots of pot lights pushed the price up a bit as well i suppose.

If you individually hire contractors yourself it will only cost you about 25K.

Developing a basement is fairly simple and you can hire out sub contractors and cut out the middle man. Unless you just don't want to deal with it.
