Mobility plans
I currently have great plans with Freedom Mobile which are fantastic as far as cost and add-ons, HOWEVER, the coverage sucks outside of major centers, and even in some major cities.
Checked plans and talked to reps for the majors and Rogers/Bell are more than double the cost Im currently paying, Telus is about 1.75x.
What is the experience with Telus like? Good coverage and support?
My current plan which is ok if you are simply hanging around in major cities. Not great for business if you travel outside of major centers.

Would be interested to hear about this too from others. My wife is with TELUS on a "loyalty plan" for 65 dollars a month. She gets 4 or 6 gigs of data, and unlimited Canadian calling and texting.
We could have saved her 10 to move to Koodoo but we we're just too lazy to do the switch.

Take a look at Public Mobile. It is owned by Telus and uses the same towers, but support is through forums only, so cost is much cheaper

Public mobile operates @ 3g speeds so I wonder how reliable the network is. Freedom is the same, you get the rogers network but at @3g.
Anyone have public and can comment on reliability?

I'm on public and it's basically the same as Koodo as far as reception outside the city, I think they even use the same towers since Telus owns both. It's 3G and I don't even notice the difference at all, but probably would if I streamed movies/video

TELUS just launched new offers that separate the cost of a new device from the monthly rate - some decent options if you don't require a new phone.
$75
10GB of Full Speed LTE Data
Unlimited 512MB Data
Unlimited Canada Wide Texts
Unlimited Canada Calling
Call Display, Voicemail, Call waiting
Then if you did need a new phone you can just finance whatever portion you want on that for 24 months.

I'm with Koodo. I bought a phone for less than $200 and went prepaid. My monthly bill is $17.25 which includes unlimited texts. I then add data and phone minutes to it. I think 1 GB of data costs me about $25 but that will last me about 4-5 months since I mainly only use the internet when on WiFi. I think 100 talk minutes are around $10 but that will probably last me a year.
This kind of plan isn't for everyone but it works for me.

$60 Koodo BYOD.
10 GB
Unlimited talk/text
Don't know if I will ever leave this plan. With work it costs me $3 a month.

Aren’t the new Rogers and Telus plans for 75$ the same as the discount carrier plans now?
For 10-20$ I’d rather the reliability of the big networks

So for those recommending Telus, any issues?

Telus are a pain to deal with if you have a problem, the techs and service reps are good but you can sit on hold for 30+min easily. Don't trust anything they offer you verbally, make them put it in an email, I've had them deny verbal agreements in the past.
That being said their coverage and quality is excellent.

Telus and Bell combined have by far the best network in Canada. But that also means Koodo has a great Network. If you go BYOD, there's really not a great reason to use Telus unless you're Telus shareholder I guess

Take a look at 7/11 speakout plans, too. They use Rogers. I grabbed a sim card when I needed a plan for a week, I think they have pretty good prices. Plus you can grab a Slurpee while you are there.

I've had Telus, Koodo and Public mobile. I will never use Telus again.
I find I have the best CS with Koodo and they seem the easiest to deal with and have the best plans IMO. Public mobile works well, but if you have an issue it's a huge PITA. Unless they changed it, you had to post a message on a forum and wait for a moderator to get ahold of you. Sometimes this took a few days, and a few days without a phone is not fun.
Koodo also has a tab plan so if you want discounts on phones that way, that may be the way to go. Public gives discounts if you prepay or refer other members etc.
And reception is also very similar if not the same with all 3 as they're all owned by the parent company Telus.

They have changed their plan for BYOD recently. Rogers has the same.
+5$ a line discount if multiples.
$75
10GB of Full Speed LTE Data
Unlimited 512MB Data
Unlimited Canada Wide Texts
Unlimited Canada Calling
Call Display, Voicemail, Call waiting

The plan looks ok until you add the 10$ for calling the USA...and thats limited to 1000 minutes. Seems like thats how they get you at Koodo, add-ons.

Public Mobile, like Koodo, is a Telus owned MNVO. They all use the same network.
And Telus is fine outside the major centres. Probably has the best coverage overall, really.
For me, however, Freedom is fine, and I'm on a friends and family plan. So even if I do end up eating roaming fees if I travel, it's still far cheaper than even Public Mobile overall.
