Default alternative to Malwarebytes

I use the free version. the problem with it, is while its good and I run scans with it, it seems to interfere with programs while its active. I ran into an excel issue where it locked spreadsheets into protected mode and locked up excel. Some of my games will absolutely refuse to function while its its in the systems tray.

I'm looking for a similar scenario a good free malware scanner that I can run manually.

SuperAntiSpyware. The free version ONLY runs on demand.

Are you actually finding threats that free malware scanners take care of? I don't understand how these things still exist. They can't do anything about ransomware which is the biggest threat to any casual internet user, and the stuff they can take care of is only after the infection, which is usually too late

IMO antivirus programs for personal PC use are a complete waste of time and money. A properly configured firewall, built-in Windows Defender, and being educated on what not to click on will be far more effective. And if you still need more peace of mind then invest in proper backups for important data, that way you're covered from infection and hardware failures
