wranglers Heat rejoin Pacific Division in 21/22

Not surprising, and looks like relocation of the AHL affiliate is put off for at least another season.

https://stocktonheat.com/news/heat-r...on-in-2021-22/

Quote:
The Stockton Heat and American Hockey League announced Monday that the Heat, proud AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, will be returning to the Pacific Division in 2021-22.

Stockton will be joined by Abbotsford (Vancouver Canucks), Bakersfield (Edmonton Oilers), Colorado (Colorado Avalanche), Henderson (Vegas Golden Knights), Ontario (Los Angeles Kings), San Diego (Anaheim Ducks), San Jose (San Jose Sharks) and Tucson (Arizona Coyotes) in the nine-team division.

Along with the Pacific Division, the Western Conference will also include a seven-team Central Division comprised of Chicago (Carolina Hurricanes), Grand Rapids (Detroit Red Wings), Iowa (Minnesota Wild), Manitoba (Winnipeg Jets), Milwaukee (Nashville Predators), Rockford (Chicago Blackhawks) and Texas (Dallas Stars).

I would be surprised if they relocate at all, honestly. I think remaining in Stockton makes too much sense, particularly within the scope of that division.

I think the Kraken are putting their AHL team in Palm Springs in 22-23.

That would mean that one of those teams is moving (Hello Denver).

I wonder what the deal is with Sacramento? It seems like a prime location - State capital (so there must be some money there), a population over 500,000, 3 airports, an NBA team.

Why won't anyone go there?

I don't think their new arena even has an ice plant. It was designed as a basketball-first arena, but unlike Brooklyn and other arenas that can put in a hockey rink with reduced capacity, Sacramento apparently can't even do that.

Relo is really only a matter of time when you look at the history of our AHL affiliate. As far as I know, no one is calling Stockton a rousing success.

IMO the best thing about this news is that this division will start playing a full schedule by the 2022/23 season. The shorter schedule always seemed like a disadvantage for getting players acclimated to the pro game.

The main reason they relocate is they still don't have a long term lease agreement with the City of Stockton.

If the team gets a deal that is too good to pass up from another city, they will consider it.

I wonder if there has been any progress on the idea of building a practice rink (and possibly new home arena) in Manteca, between Stockton and Modesto? That story first broke a little over a year ago, but nothing else has come out since.

Someone on NHL Network yesterday said that Calgary is looking to move the Heat to Colorado. I can't remember who it was.

Stockton has the second lowest (or maybe it's the lowest now) AHL attendance. Sounds like a year-to-year thing for the Flames.

I believe that original story of the Heat moving to Colorado Springs was floated by the previous President.

He was gone a week later.

New AHL playoff structure for 2021-22:

All but 2 teams in each Division will make the postseason. Best-of-three play-in first round, followed by a regular 4 round/16 team playoff -- but with two rounds of best-of-five before 2 rounds of best-of-seven.

The AHL is usually used a testing ground for ideas the NHL is considering... so keep an eye on this.

Not to be too much of a wet blanket, but this isn't the first time the AHL has had a play-in round. It expanded the playoffs after it absorbed a number of IHL teams back in the early 00s, and it only lasted a couple of seasons.

So every team in the Pacific makes the playoffs?

Do they all get a popsicle afterwards too?

No, there's 9 teams in the Pacific this year. 2 teams from each division will not qualify for the postseason.

Yes, I was just being casual and sarcastic. Hard to take it seriously when 7 of 9 make the playoffs (unless we're talking about Jeri Ryan)
