The teams that win 2021 NHL free agency will be the teams that sit out the first two weeks. Some of these rumors of what players are asking are absolutely horrifying.

Will be interesting to see what ends up being true.
In a lot of cases what's being rumoured in these deals doesn't make sense in a world with a flat cap and where most teams are already tight on cap.
The contracts we have seen signed up to this point (RNH, Duclair) have come in at a lower AAV than we've seen in recent years.
Feels to me like some of these things are likely agents "leaking" the prices to see if they can drive what is a bit of a soft market up somehow, and doing some posturing in the market.
Was kind of similar last year as leading up to free agency we'd hear stuff like Markstrom already getting offered 7 x $7M , or that teams would need to do a sign and trade to offer him 8 years, and in the end that didn't happen.

I hadn’t thought of that. A centre depth chart of Lindholm-Landeskog-Backlund looks very nice.
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Buchnevich (via Monahan trade)
Tkachuk-Landeskog-Mangiapane
Dube-Backlund-Armia (UFA)
Lucic-Gawdin-Ritchie

Why are the Rangers trading the healthy Buchnevich (a player trending upwards quite quickly) for the injured Monahan ( a player currently trending in the opposite direction)?
Is it to make their cap situation worse?

He does a great job of following all of the real insiders though. I don’t think he broken one trade. Also had the Flames going for Foligno at the deadline lol

He's actually taken 3x more faceoffs in the last three years than he had in his entire career beforehand. He averages around 9 faceoffs a game in that time... and about 1.5 faceoffs a game before that.
He's not a center.

I don’t know if he actually played the center position, but it does show that he’s taken a number of face offs since the ‘18 season, and did a good job at it too:
Landeskog FO's Total W L %
2017-2018 418 215 203 51.4%
2018-2019 694 361 333 52.0%
2019-2020 486 274 212 56.4%
2020-2021 509 288 221 56.6%

These are the contracts I'd be willing to throw out:
7 x 7 to Landeskog- seems like he will get a better offer but I think anything more than this would be foolish.
7x 6.75 to Hall- some will hate this but I think he's just as good a bet as Landeskog right now. Bit of hometown flavor too
6x5.5 for Hyman- still seems like we would regret this big time
Honestly I am liking the alleged pricing around Hall much much more than some of these others. A 5.5 offer from Boston seems like it could be beat.

ED selection -> Giordano
UFA signing -> Landeskog - 7 years x $7,000,000 AAV (get the Swedes to band together and sell him if he makes UFA)
UFA signing -> Martinez - 3 years x $4,000,000 AAV (other options Oleksiak/Barrie/Suter/etc)
UFA signing -> Raanta - 1 year x $1,500,000 (or similar goalie)
UFA signing -> Johansson - 1 year x $1,500,000 (or similar player)
UFA signing -> Rodrigues - 1 year x $1,000,000 (or similar player)
UFA signing -> Stone - 1 year x $750,000 (or similar player)
RFA signing -> Dube - 1 year x $950,000
RFA signing -> Valimaki - 1 year x $950,000
RFA signing -> Mackey - 1 year $850,000
RFA signing -> Gawdin - 1 year $750,000
RFA signing -> Phillips - 1 year $750,000
Roster:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk
Landeskog - Lindholm - Mangiapane
Dillon Dube - Backlund - Rodrigues
Milan Lucic - Johansson - Ritchie
Gawdin - Phillips
Hanifin - Tanev
Martinez - Andersson
Valimaki - Stone
Mackey
Markstrom
Raanta
$1,100,000 cap space
Meh lol
I don't see a scenario where Treliving makes zero trades but whatever

Lost me at Monahan as 1C

There is a big difference between taking face offs and actually playing centre.

Obviously. Just showing that he took face offs and wins them more often than not. That’s something good to consider. The Flames could always use more possession time, that’s how you win games.

Landeskog isn't coming here unless we offer him way more money than anyone else and even then I highly doubt it. All these contract offers sound so desperate. Throwing big money and term at guys like Hall and Hyman will make this organization the new San Jose Sharks without the decades of being competitive.

Here I thought that you won games by scoring more goals in the game than the other team.

I don’t know. Friedman will drop a nugget on his podcast and he will show a tweet from 2 weeks earlier where he said the same thing.

The numbers thrown around for Landeskog make me wonder why there is so much consternation about Tkachuk’s next contract.
Assuming he wants to stay, $9 million per year for 5 or 6 years is not a bad deal if you are getting the prime years of his career.
It’s certainly better than 7 years x $7 or $8 million per year for Landeskog where the back half of that contract he will be underperforming the contract.

Because ideally a 24 year old, who should be an RFA, wouldn't get as much money as a 28 year old UFA trying to cash in with the contract of his life. Landeskog has only been paid $5,571,429 AAV since 2014.
Tkachuk has made $7 million on his current deal. He'll then make $9 mill next year, and then he cash in as a 25 year old UFA.
Compare him to someone like Brayden Point, who is much better, yet has only been making $6,750,000, and then will be an RFA.
Again, I'm not blaming Tkachuk. From his perspective, it was genius.

We have 13.5 mill to resign Dube, add 4-5 forwards, 2 defencemen and a back up goalie who can play at least 30 games with Markstrom having usually one injury a year.
Let Gio go, turn that cap space into 20 mill and fill out the team. It’s a blessing in disguise.

The team is down a top pairing Dman in that situation so not sure I share the sentiment it is a blessing to lose him for absolutely nothing.
Unless Valimaki makes a monumental leap the Flames are in the free agent market with the biggest need being a top end Dman
