Default Nintendo Labo Announced: Launches 4/20/2018

Feel like this deserves it's own thread.

Nintendo announced a new accessory creator/game for the Switch today. Honestly one of the more creative and innovative things I have seen in the last little while.

Interested to see reviews and how difficult it is to get this stuff to work but I am really intrigued by it all.

Also The Guardian got to spend some time with it and has a good article here.

Other First impressions here - mostly are surprisingly positive.

This is really cool and maybe the most 'Nintendo' thing ever.

While everyone else is puffing their chest about their framerate and resolution they're like "Hey, how about... DIY cardboard accessories!"

Only Nintendo could find a way to sell a $2 sheet of cardboard with a $5 mobile game for $80 and have people eat it up.

Kudos.

Nah. Lego has been selling $2 of recycled plastic for $80 and having people eat it up for years.

It's not about the materials but the design and creativity that goes into this stuff. Some of the mechanics of this with the elastic bands and IR camera reading images is pretty impressive for a DIY build kit.

This may be the dumbest thing I have ever seen, kudos indeed Nintendo.

I mean, Lego pieces are very high quality and there's a reason beyond the brand name why people prefer it to Megablocks, etc.

This actually looks pretty neat but... does it have to be cardboard? I feel like it's going to break fairly easily.

I agree. My 6 y/o and I could handle this and have a ton of fun with it... until his 3 y/o destroyer of all things sister comes along and Godzilla's the $hit out of it.

Does anyone else keep reading the name as Nintendo Lambo? That I'd buy!

I'm still not convinced Google Cardboard is/was ever a real thing.

Not me and apparently not you. But I'm sure there are a bunch of kids that'll be in for it.

It's surprising in a way that I'd never thought Nintendo or video games would go. That's pretty neat in and of itself. Seeing Nintendo having the funds and inclination to mess around with new stuff like this is cool and of itself to me.

Yeah - it has been the top selling video game item on Amazon US, UK, and on different European Amazon sites since it was put up for pre-order.

So while it's not for everyone it seems like there is a big enough market for it right now.

I'm sure it will sell great at the start but in 6 or 12 months no one will be talking about it. Parents are going to regret paying a high price for cardboard. They will spend a couple of hours putting it together and then having their idiot kid or pet destroying it the same day. It will be like the special accessories that came out for the Wii. People will used for a little bit, but it will soon be gathering dust in the closet.

And then Nintendo will go bankrupt and the entire gaming industry implodes and the world ends.

Seriously though, you just described every toy since the dawn of time. It'll eventually end up in the closet yes.

I would not buy this for myself, ever. But for my two young children, they would really like this. Seems like a good family thing to do, for a relatively cheap price.
