Oilers sign Kris Russel to a 1 year extension ($1.25 mil)

The #Oilers have signed defenceman Kris Russell to a one-year contract extension through the 2021-22 season with an AAV of $1.25 million.

Hey maybe with an extra year or two he’ll be able to have more points as an Oiler than a Flame. I think it’s worth trying for until the end of time.

Nothing to see here...
they need to have a defenseman to expose in the expansion draft, and
Russell is still better than what the Oilers could replace him with.
would love to see it be for $4m+, it will probably be something like $2M

Yeah. Maybe that want the expansion issue dealt with, so they can pursue other players that don't necessarily solve the problem.

What I find wierd about this is that they had a chance to flip him at the trade deadline for assets since they'll be sellers and still re-sign him next year.

I assume that it will be much cheaper than his last deal but this shows they will not be moving him out before the season starts. The Oilers have ~700k in cap space and have not signed Bear.
Moving forward does this mean they are moving on from Larsson or Nurse?
Bear, Broberg, Bouchard, Klefbom, Russell looking more and more like their d after next season. Not sure how this crew is bringing them a Stanley cup for a few years. Unless Bouchard really is the next Pronger
