Throw on top that this contract doesn't kick in for another year. He turns 34 in May. So this contract is for a season where he is 34/35. Hes been useless for a few years now. Only getting worse.

I would not be shocked he sits in the press box a lot this year

Oilers animus aside and that’s a stretch for me....

Russell might be the most courageous, competitive and humble player that’s been around , in a long long time.

Or,maybe I just respect real cowboys.

I have nothing but respect from what Russell has accomplished in spite of an obvious shortage of NHL skill. The guy has simply willed a highly successful, long-term hockey career for himself with which he has earned millions of dollars. That is incredible.

When I think of K.Russell I think of him scoring the last minute winner in game one against the Nucks. That game one victory set up the series to me.

Nothing wrong with Russell at that price but why the urgency to make the extension now? It’s more likely he gets injured or his play falls off a cliff than outplaying the contract. Why not wait until the season is half over then make a decision? Even if this is to expose someone for expansion there is a risk Russell gets injured and doesn’t meet the games played criteria.

The requirements are 40 in one season or 70 in the previous 2. Word is they are going to prorate that requirement based on GP this year. If it’s a 48 game sched, then he needs to play like 9 games this coming season. If for some chance he does get injured and can’t play 9 games he goes on LTIR and they use that to grab another D guy, if he falls off a cliff he can go to the AHL or sit in the press box as number 7. AHL and his cap hit is effectively buried. There’s really no risk.

He's a 7th defenseman on a halfway decent team.

He's terrible positionally, he's awful along the boards, he's weak in battles. He might try and be a cowboy and be a hell of a nice guy, but he finds employment in Edmonton because the talent level of that blueline is awful.

I think it goes to show how hard it is for Edmonton to get players willing to sign there.

I agree when the extension kicks in Russell's contract could be buried and the risk with the extension isn't a big risk. What I'm saying is I could see him being a guy the Oilers want to move out this trade deadline. When his cap hit is $4 mil and he's in and out of the lineup. He has a NMC so he can't be sent down but he has a 15 team list he can be traded to. He also only makes $2.5 mil this year. If the Oilers are in first this year and looking to add at the deadline and Russell is not playing well or worse than normal adding the 2nd year on might prevent one of those 15 teams he can be traded to not to want him. The risk IMO here is if the Oilers need that cap space this coming season for me could be more valuable than lining up a dman that meets their expansion draft requirements. There are months left in this off season and more than likely a season that doesn't start until February. If Russell uses his NTC to block all teams out of the playoffs because he wants to stay in Edmonton that badly then he would sign this deal before the expansion draft next off season.

I could see teams out of the playoffs taking him for a 3rd the season for a pick if the Oilers need the cap. That options gone IMO

I don’t think they want to move him. From all accounts he’s a great great mentor for the young dmen, plus need the veteran presence on the back end. He’s not the only option to move for space.

Yeah, I think he is a very useful player at $1.25M. The Oilers lack depth on the blueline, and are waiting for a couple young guys to develop. Russell is a useful filler.

(one of the few guys on that team that I refuse to hate)
