Tonight on Nova - The Mind of a Rampage Killer.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/body/mi...ge-killer.html

Program Description

What makes a person walk into a theater or a church or a classroom full of students and open fire? What combination of circumstances compels a human being to commit the most inhuman of crimes? Can science in any way help us understand these horrific events and provide any clues as to how to prevent them in the future? As the nation tries to understand the tragic events at Newtown, NOVA correspondent Miles O’Brien separates fact from fiction, investigating new theories that the most destructive rampage killers are driven most of all, not by the urge to kill, but the wish to die. Could suicide–and the desire to go out in a media-fueled blaze of glory–be the main motivation? How much can science tell us about the violent brain? Most importantly, can we recognize dangerous minds in time—and stop the next Newtown?

A war zone might be marginally safer....

At least with a war zone you can avoid where they're shooting in most cases.

There are six in Spokane just in that time.

Come on this is Spokane here, a small middle class, university city with an ok economy and a fairly homogeneous population.

There sure is a problem when a place like this already has 6 murders

Spokane has actually been sketchy for a while. I used to go there often for work and I found it to be far less safe than I remembered it as a kid. There are a lot of uneducated and desperate people in that town.

Spokane has also been high on the list of meth cities for a long time, it's not the "small middle class, university city with an ok economy" you think it is.

There is no US city that doesn't at least have some sketchiness to it. There are a couple of decent towns, but cities? Nope. I don't even feel safe in Helena or Great Falls. And these are about as far off the radar as you can get when people think of "American cities."

I feel like the entire west coast is a giant meth zone. Virtually every small town/city you go to, whether in Oregon, Washington or California, the number of walking zombies everywhere is pretty staggering. It's a problem that I don't think gets near enough the attention that it deserves.

Whether I am or not is another question, but personally, I feel much safer in the big cities than the smaller ones.

Well with a little googling, I found out that for an American, a warzone is safer.

Since March 19, 2003 (the invasion of Iraq) there have been 12787 American soliders killed, which works out to........

3.52 soldiers/day.

Obviously that doesn't prove a damn thing, but it's kind of funny to think about.

I guess the discussions lead by Biden in Congress yesterday got a little heated as he heads up a motion to ban high capacity mags and a lengthy list of assault weapons. Current owners would be grandfathered.

Families of Sandy Hook victims showed up to testify.

Saw that Lott guy on PM, last night. It's crazy how he has convinced himself and others that more guns is the best answer to gun violence.

He actually said that one of the reasons to have an AR15 is that it sometimes takes more than 10 shots to take care of people breaking into your house.

Is a rifle even an appropriate weapon for home defense? I could see a handgun or shotgun being useful in a small, enclosed area like a house, but a rifle?

It does. View the stats at the start of this video to see how even pro shooters like cops have a low % hit rate.

Smaller magazine capacity will make no difference whatsoever.

This is about getting the foot in the door for more gun control down the road......incrementally.

On a daily basis, almost as many vets kill themselves in America from mental/emotional trauma, PTSD etc.

Sad really....

So part of your argument is that people need more bullets cause people are lousy shots?

I just want to be certain so when we talk about innocent bystanders being defended by others with guns this is part of the discussion again.

If there's one thing that the Old West teaches us, it's that everyone having a gun does not lead to outlawry, cattle rustling, shoot-outs, bank robberies, violent feuds, and the railroad men thumpin' skulls when the coolies get out of hand.

Oh, for those halcyon days of peace and orderly behaviour!
