The Mavs snapped their winning streak on the road on Friday night when they fell 4-0 to the Wichita Thunder. However, they bounced back on Saturday night and narrowly beat the Thunder 4-3 in a shootout. Ben Halford started in net on Friday while McDonald underwent some minor injury maintenance. McDonald was back in net on Saturday for the win. Their next match will be against Wichita for the 4th straight match up and it will take place at home on Friday, September 23rd.

The Mavericks are back at home to host the Wichita Thunder once again. They go into this game sitting #7 in the league with 21 points and a 13-10-2-1 record. They also have the 2nd best winning percentage in the league with a 0.808. Mason McDonald will start in tonight's game.

The first period plays with fairly few whistles. Both teams playing like they are used to each other as it is the 5th matchup this season. Lloydminster native, David Dziurzynski opens up the scoring from a feed from his brother Darian. The Mavericks get the first penalty but it is cut short from a Thunder power play. Neither team produces on that but Wichita evens up the scoring with 2:30 to go in the period. Shots finish up 11-10 in favour of the Thunder after 20 minutes of play.

Another fairly slow start to the 2nd. Halfway through a fight breaks out between David Dziurzynski and a contending Thunder player. Dziurzynski gets an additional 2 minutes for a self-defence elbow that the refs were not happy with. With 4 seconds to go in the penalty, Pierre-Cedric Labrie puts Wichita up 2-1. The same player then throws the puck up to the blue line minutes later and sits on the bench for closing the hand on the puck. Mavs get a power play goal from that opportunity courtesy of Corey Durocher who gets his first point in his first game of the season. Mason McDonald looking pretty solid up to this point and keeps the Mavericks on top. Time expires and the Mavs hold a 3-2 lead and a 19-14 lead in shots.

Early in the 3rd, Cliff Watson gets dealt a cheap shot hit near the Wichita bench and Riley Sweeney decides to be a good teammate and deal with the player responsible. Both sides take a seat for fighting. Wichita keeps things a little chippy with some chirps and harder checks than before. The Mavericks score their 4th on the power play from Matt Robertson. Mavs power play unit gets another shot but does not make a whole lot happen on that opportunity. They hold their lead throughout the third and win it 4-2 keeping a perfect 7 win home record. Shots end 33-24

The Mavericks start their weekend looking for their first win against Tulsa this season. This is their 3rd matchup of the season and with the Mavericks still undefeated at home there is a lot riding on this game. Tulsa sits at 3rd in the league so a win would be a very exciting one for the Mavericks.

With a home two-game, two-day series, Ben Halford gets the start in net with Mason McDonald likely getting the nod for tomorrow night's competition.

The first period is played with quite a bit of speed and not a lot of space is left for either team to get any quality scoring chances set up. Halford gets some leather on many of the first shots but misreads a shot that hits the crossbar and lands in the back of the net. The Mavericks get a late power play after an interference call but do not get a good rush on it until the last 10 seconds of the period where it comes a little too late. Shots end 15-14 for the Mavericks as they trail on the board 1-0.

The power play expires in the second with the Mavericks unable to take the opportunity to answer back. The Mavericks rack up 4 penalty minutes but the Oilers are unable to extend their scoring any further. Not a whole lot going on in the second frame. A few rushes, a few puck battles but nothing overly noteworthy. Quite a boring period that ends with no change in the score and the Oilers ahead of the Mavericks 24-18 in shots.

The third period continues to be frustrating. Not a whole lot of quality scoring chances for Tulsa but less for the Mavericks. They get two power plays that they barely register shots on and Rocco Carzo came the closest to tying the game on a quality feed that he was unable to elevate. The last drive by the Mavericks was a mess and as a result, they fall to the Oilers 1-0 and lose their perfect home streak. Rematch same time tomorrow night. Shots end 32-27 for Tulsa

The Mavericks host the Allen Americans for a two day weekend series at home. Ben Halford gets the start in hopes of changing the result they got a week ago. Since that loss to Tulsa they came back out and won 6-4 the next night then fell in a shootout in Indy on Tuesday night.

The Mavericks take an early penalty but it is killed with relatively little issue. Allen gets more of the zone time throughout the first bit of the period but a lot of their shots miss the net. It actually takes a early penalty kill for the Mavericks to wake up a bit and get back on the attack. They take another 2 penalties in the period but kill them off. They get a power play of their own and a couple chances in front of the net are generated that just a slightly quicker reaction from Jared VanWormer for the redirect could have been goals. The Mavericks play out the rest of the period overpowering Allen in shots 11-6. 6 penalties ended up on the board in the first but neither team capitalizes on them.

Well the 2nd period was quite a productive one. Still quite a few penalties with each side getting 4. The Mavericks get their first of the night curtesy of David Dziurzynski who happens to be playing in his 500th pro hockey game. Rocco Carzo assited that goal as well as the next one that came seconds later from Cliff Watson. Rocco Carzo takes a penalty a little later but out of the box he is set up on a breakaway and buries it! 3 points for the captain this period. But they were not finished. Cliff Watson gets his second goal of the period after Allen takes a 5 on 3. Willie Raskob gets his second assist off of this tally. With about a minute and a half to go in the period, Zach Pochiro of the Americans scores and on the celebration by the bench, Zach Fischer runs into a player and they exchange pleasentries. By pleasentries the Allen player gets a 5 minute spearing call and Fischer gets a game misconduct and a slashing call that Greg Betzold serves for him. It was hard to see with a crowd of players but Fischer got out of it very frustrated and threw his helmet down on the ice. The period ends with 3:48 to go in the Allen penalty and 48 seconds to go in the Mavericks penalty. Shots end 23-14 for the Mavericks.

The 3rd starts off just as fun as the 2nd. Willie Raskob rips one from the blue line that sneaks past the Allen netminder. Rocco Carzo gets his 4th point of the night from an assits on that goal. Another quick goal to follow it comes from David Dziurzynksi's 2nd of the night and the Mavericks take a 6-1 lead. Allen answers back with one that visibly frustrated Halford as he thought there may have been interference. The call stands however. The Mavs still ahead by 4. Not a whole lot of action to finish the game. Allen tries to get some momentum back but it comes too late. Darian Dziurzynski takes a late slashing call with only 22 seconds to go but it doesn't affect the team. The Mavericks win 6-2 and shots end 31-27.

Ben Halford will get the start for the 2nd night in a row after a solid performance last night. The Mavs get another shot at Allen in hopes to take away 4 points this weekend. Halford sits at a 2.60 goals against average and a .921 save percentage going into tonight's game. McDonald is sitting at a 2.76 goals against average and a .901 save percentage.

The teams show more restraint in the first bit of the first period. No penalty frenzy like last night. The Mavericks get on the board first when Willie Raskob is set up at the point by C.J. Eick and Zach Fischer. Shortly after, the Mavericks get a power play after a cross-checking call but 17 seconds into their man advantage, Greg Betzold takes a tripping penalty and they play out the 4 on 4. The Mavericks finally get a quality power play opportunity an Greg Betzold capitalizes. Cliff Watson and Mike Panowyk pick up assists. A couple power plays come and go for each team but fans show a lot of disappointment in goalie screening on Halford in particular. They think the refs were missing quite a few calls but it looked pretty clean for the most part. The Mavs end the first period up 2-0 and leading 14-8 in shots.

The 2nd period does not offer more goal production but the abundance of penalties that we called last night come back again in this frame. Mavs take 3 including a full 2 minute 5 on 3 disadvantage but are able to kill them off. Zach Fischer appears to be getting into trouble again with a lot of heated exchanges happening between whistles. However, he causes one of the Allen alternate Captains to get a 10-minute misconduct. Score stays 2-0 and Mavericks still lead 22-15 in shots.

The third period starts slipping away from the Mavs after Zach Fischer takes a penalty that the Americans are able to get their first goal on then less than a minute later put up another one. The momentum for the away team continues and a few minutes after their 2nd goal, they put up a 3rd putting them ahead of the Mavericks for the first time in the game. They even start to overpower in shots 26-24 with 8 minutes to go in the 3rd period. But the game is not over yet. Rocco Carzo squeezes one past the Allen goalie and ties up the game. 33 seconds later Cliff Watson gets a goal of his own and the Mavericks regain their lead. Allen tries to pull their goalie to make something happen in the dying minute but take a penalty that really hurts their chances. Mavericks win it 4-3 and get their shot lead back to 32-38

I just noticed that neither Nick Schneider or Mason McDonald are on the roster for Kansas City. Are they both injured?. Any idea when they will return?

I don’t think Schneider has been in KC very much at all. He has been in Stockton with Parsons not playing.

Alrighty, I'm back everyone.

Here is an update on the goalie situation for the Mavericks. When Jon Gillies rejoined Stockton, Nick Schneider came back to Kansas City. Schneider has spent the majority of the season with Stockton only coming back to Kansas City during their 3 game road trip in Idaho that occured when no Stockton games were scheduled. He went back to California by the next time they were scheduled to play. The Mavs borrowed Max Milosek when there was goaltending shuffling throughout the organization. He played 2 games.

Nick Potter, the head trainer for the Mavericks confirmed tonight that Mason McDonald is currently out with a week to week soft tissue injury. It seems more precautionary at the moment and considering it is reoccurring, I believe it to be his back bothering him but I am not 100% sure on that fact. He will be revaluated this coming Monday.

As of now, Ben Halford has been doing quite well for the Mavericks and he is expected to split weekend series with Schneider until there are any more changes.

The Mavericks played their 1st of 2 against the Cincinnatti Cyclones this weekend. With an emotional overtime 7-6 win and Mike Panowyk earning a hat trick to end the game. The Cyclones sit at 2nd in the league with 52 points. Corey Durocher and Jordan Klimek were both activated from the IR today and both netted one in tonight's game.

Ben Halford got the start between the pipes but unfortunately let in 3 goals in the first period of the game. A couple bad hops that he couldn't have done anything about but also lack of effort from the defense would be the cause of these goals.

I am curious to find out what the chat was between the first and second period because the Mavericks score 5 unanswered goals in the second frame and stun Cincinnatti. Mavericks goals came from Panowyk, Panowyk again, Klimek, Fischer and Cooper in that order. Zach Fischer has been another interesting story as of late as he has been starting to find his footing with this team. He has put up a goal in the last 2 games and was very involved in some of this game's biggest plays.

In the third, the Cyclones got their 4th goal, tied it then the Mavericks got their lead back. Unfortunately in a broken play in the last minute and a half got Cincinnatti another one and this game would not be decided in regulation. Willie Raskob got a break in overtime and threw the puck on net with Mike Panowyk on the doorstep to tap in the loose puck for the win.

The Mavericks retire their first number tomorrow night and will take the ice against the Cyclones once again.

The Kansas City Mavericks face off against the Cincinnati Cyclones for the second night in a row on home ice. Tonight they retired a player that played in KC in 2011 for 4 seasons. #43 Sebastien Thinel. He still holds the all-time scoring record and wore the C for the Mavs for 4 seasons he was here. Thinel was joined with many other former Mavs for history weekend.

The coaches make the decision to put Ben Halford in net for the second night in a row. Schneider will back up once again. Very scarcely attended tonight with the Kansas City Chiefs playing this afternoon. Probably the least amount of people I've seen at a Mavericks game since I have been covering them. The Mavericks organization also invested in some arena improvements including better lighting and two new larger video boards.

Not a whole lot of action through the first period of play. A little bit of an awkward period with players slipping and sliding all over the place. Mavs passes were not looking too crisp and players seemed to be losing the puck behind them. However, they still ended up getting the most zone pressure and outshot the Cyclones 9-3. It seems odd that Halford is starting over Schneider tonight but he is owning his crease. Standing very confidently against this strong team. Doesn't make you think this guy doesn't earn his starts at all. Joey Sides is credited with 4/9 Mavericks shots after the first period.

The second period was very penalty-filled for both sides. Guys filtered in and out of the box almost immediately. Because of this, Cincinnati took advantage of one of their power plays and got on the board first. It is unfortunate considering just minutes prior, Halford came up with the best string of saves I've seen from a Mavericks goalie this season. He defends the delayed penalty but is beat on the penalty kill. Shortly after the physical game got turned up a notch and Jordan Klimek gets into a fight to stand up for a teammate who took an ugly hit. The penalties continue through the period and the score remains. Mavericks lead in shots 17-12 after 2.

The 3rd starts off with the Mavericks getting a huge 5 on 3 opportunity for 1:15. The Cyclone goalie not letting Mavericks find any holes. He was the same goalie that came in relief last night in the third period after the Mavericks 5 goal period. Cincinnati strikes again on a goal that looked a lot like the goal earlier in the game. The Mavericks appear to get more impatient and almost desperate for a goal but their play is not very clean as a result. Bad passes and turnovers appear to plague the team this period. Cincinnati's goalie read them like a book and does not let any of the 31 shots in. Mavericks split their weekend series and the Cyclones leave this game with a 2-0 victory.

Jared VanWormer has rejoined the team. Kansas City fell 4-0 in Wichita last night making it their 2nd shutout in a row. Mike Panowyk is on the IR. Not a whole lot of information on that for now but my assumption would be an upper-body injury, possibly a concussion after being laid out against Cincinnati last weekend. Nick Schneider played in last nights game but is apparently working back from an injury he had for the last little bit so that makes sense as to why he went that stretch without playing. Mavs get another shot at the Wichita Thunder at home tonight.

Nick Schneider gets another shot at Wichita at home tonight. The first period starts out with him getting the most action out of any Mav. Wichita jumps right on him and about 5 shots on goal are registered in the first couple of minutes. Wichita gets on the board and interestingly enough, Texeira, the scorer, has only scored against Kansas City all year. This goal being his 4th on the season. Soon after a Mavs PK expires, C.J. Eick nets one and the Mavericks get their first goal in 3 games. Darian Dziurzynski gets a goal of his own later in the period and this one comes unassisted. Mavs finish the 1st killing 1/2 penalties on a Wichita 5 on 3 and will start the 2nd period with 30 seconds of penalty killing to do.

Darian Dziurzynski gets another on the night and Jared VanWormer follows that up, putting the Mavericks up 4-1. Later in the period, Wichita gets a pair of their own and end the period with the Mavericks ahead 4-3. Play gets a little rougher and former Captain Tyler Elbrecht appears to do what he did best and instigate a fight with Joey Sides but Sides shuts him down and skates off. One of the Thunder goals that period came on a Mavs power play. Special teams for the Mavericks has drastically plummeted since the first couple months of the season and that even shows tonight. The 3rd period will start with a 4 on 4 for 1:50. Shots sit at 22-19 in favour of the Mavericks.

4 on 4 hockey doesn't change anything and both sides end up even strength with no score change. Wichita finds a way to get one back with a wraparound goal that gave me flashbacks to Gaudreau's wrap around on Fleury a couple seasons ago. Twice tonight Schneider has been beaten on the wrap around. An adjustment that should definitely be noted going forward. In the last 10 minutes of the game the Mavericks are not very smart with penalties and as a result, the Thunder score a power-play goal with less than 5 minutes to go. Mavericks get a penalty on that play but Darian Dziuzynski scores a short-handed goal with 44 seconds to go to tie this game up. No score change in regulation. The game goes to overtime.

Mavericks get 3 or 4 quality breakaways but can't place their shot. The Thunder ultimately gets the final say and flicks one over Schneider to secure the win. Mavs lose 6-5 in overtime. Shots end 29-27 for the Mavericks.

So strange that Schneider looked great in Stockton, but has been pretty brutal in KC. Flames just can’t seem to find a consistent goalie in their minors system this year.
