Do you guys still tip at resorts that list gratuities as ‘included’?

If you don’t tip for your drinks and it’s busy not expect to get served quickly or have servers come to your area

If you are going to “camp” at a bar or section of the pool a good first tip will also ensure you’re getting drinks with proper amount of liquor and frequent attention.

There’s Hotel Xcaret, and there’s everything else.

Unfortunately, because of this, it is also reaching stratospheric prices. Sigh.

I would highly recommend manzanillo honestly if you want to trip around. Beautiful beach with a fishing village, and cheap. Great seafood, and all the amenities.

Prices have really skyrocketed all over Mexico this winter.

We’ve used Canada Transfers every time we’ve gone to the Caribbean side of Mexico and they are phenomenal, had car seats for our kids and cold drinks etc available for everyone at pickup etc.

Good drivers, clean vehicles every time.
Easy pickup from airport too and don’t have to worry about hotel shuttles or all the random scam taxis/transfer companies.

Depends on where it is you are staying. At Club Med Ixtapa, the workers can get into alot of trouble for accepting a tip. When I stayed at Secrets in Puerto Vallarta I kept bills in my swim trunks and tipped for every drink and meal. But I would also mention that tipping didn't seems to get me any better service or anything like that.

i was recently in Cabo and I would say that i felt that tipping got me slightly better service in terms of more regular visits while we were pool side

Xcaret in particular is crazy.

We went 3 years ago for a week and paid ~ $2K/person.

Now prices are $4700-$6K/person for that one hotel.

Absolutely. The staff are not paid well. They rely on tips. That's just the way it works when you get service in less developed countries. You don't need to tip huge amounts. Just a few dollars here and there.

I would tip all the service people and the cleaning staff.

I directly booked Paradisus Playa del Carmen couple of weeks ago, saw a slightly discounted rate on Westjet vacations and called to cancel, they offered me 10% off instantly. Kept my original reservation.

I'm in the same boat as the original poster, family vacation with 2x small kids and wife in March. First big vacation since covid, hope it goes well!

My Son and I just got back and stayed at the Bacelo Maya Caribe. The beach was beautiful, not a lot of seaweed and the view made up for any deficiencies. Also nice not having people running around reserving seats with a towel. Big resort, food was good and staff outstanding. Flew down with WestJet and booked their private car service (now an option). DON'T. Service was crap. Book something like Canada Transfers.

I noticed the same with Excellence Playa Mujueres. It was going to be $11K for the two of us to go for the week, which was double of what we paid in 2019.

Great resort, but it's not $11K worth of value.

I was in Mexico in October.

I like tipping. Sitting with the bartender on his break, shooting the breeze and just learning a little about their life? Their wages are really low and $20? It means nothing to me but it means a lot to them.

The problem with Gratuities included is that it is a trickle down thing. Essentially the manager takes a cut, then the supervisor etc.

When you tip on the bill and charge it to the room that same thing happens. You tip $5 and the server might get $1.

Make sure you tip in cash. It is way better. We will typically allocate about $200-$300 in small bills for tipping only when we go.

Also, give a tip to a Manager if they help you with something. $20 to $30 is good. It is amazing how all of a sudden a full restaurant is no longer full or your kids get a treat dropped off at your room.
