Once we have at least a few players registered I will start the tournament. If you are not interested in playing, maybe send me a note so we don’t wait for you—no hard feelings.

It should probably go without saying, but…. No beads allowed.

Here is a link in case that is easier: Calgarypuck Correspondence Chess Tournament

We have 5 players in our tournament so far. That’s enough to play, but maybe I will wait a few more hours and start the tourney right around when the game starts tonight.

We have 8 now—but there are also some usernames I don’t recognize either from this thread or the club. If you joined via the link, might be good to send me a note or post in the thread.

For the rest of you: do we want to make membership in the club mandatory, or do we not care? I can go either way on that.

I'm not against allowing non-members as a concept, but looking into the history of some of them is fascinating. One has 1,275 current games in progress and 54,370 completed. Another appears to be a 2000 rated blogger. One has played a total of 7 games and lost them all. One has played over 12k rapid games but this will be his first daily.

Yeah, I have to confess that I messed the settings up a little—there’s an option for “Invite Only” that I didn’t toggle until just now.

I’m honestly tempted to boot anyone who isn’t either in the club or on the board. My idea was for this to be a CP thing—even if it means we end up with fewer players. Anyone disagree?

It’s still open. Join if you want—I was about to click start.

Just… tell me your chess.com username so I don’t boot you.

QUICK TOURNAMENT UPDATE:

Even though the time control is 3 days per move, we’ve been playing pretty fast as a group and have already played 10 of 18 round 1 games.

So far Doozle (Superfraggle) is in the lead with 3 points, and is heading up the Group 2 “group of death” (which started the tournament with 2 players over 1250). CPSlava is making an impressive showing, currently holding down second place in group 2.

There are only 3 of us in Group 1, and there have been fewer games finished. But man…. they were some games. I eked out 2 wins against karim1002 (ah123), but don’t let the result fool you. They were back and forth games with complex middle and end game positions that could have gone either way. Both of us are still in our fist of 2 games against HonkyShaman, and those are still in the middle game, so group 1 is very much still up for grabs.

One game I would like to feature is the Group 2 matchup with Slava and Superfraggle, featuring the rarely seen closed Scandinavian.

https://www.chess.com/analysis/game/...059?tab=review

Very instructive game to look at for opening concepts. Also features an impressive 93% accuracy from Doozre (Superfraggle) who is obviously no slouch and maybe the early favourite. Both players played very well. The game probably turned on a single misstep from white (4. Bb5+, allowing … c6!! — forking the knight and bishop). That’s chess—it is brutal and unforgiving sometimes.

Impressive stuff all and hope everyone is having fun!

Gnomeprime is currently up on me in our first game. I think he might be the quiet top contender sneaking through just because not many of his games have finished yet.

That second game between IFF (Shadow) and ah123 (Karim) has a crazy finish featuring a great reversal and clutch rook sacrifice.

I’m not sure what that opening is, but I do like that watching the review shows a “by the book” few moves for me and then a move where the computer is like “WTF?”

It’s a fun tournament so far. I’m mostly losing, but that’s beside the point. Also, sorry for my slower responses over the past few days! Things should pick up in my end after today.

I won’t lie—I was sweating bullets in that game. At one point I was considering resigning, as I thought it was forced mate. In the end I was a bit lucky to find a sufficiently forcing line. I was in deep trouble before that.

I really thought I had you on that game…but that was a brilliant (in estimation) escape!

I thought you did too. I didn’t realize what a blunder taking on h6 was, because it let your queen in and suddenly I was staring down the barrel of a brutal attack.

And then I made it worse by running the king to f7. After 30. Qxh6, stockfish finds Rc6 for black, claiming the open file. I didn’t even consider that, because it blocks the diagonal and the a8 rook is undefended—so I thought I was losing material after white plays Rh1 and Qh8+, picking up the rook on a8. But it turns out that doesn’t work, because black has Rc2+, revealing the attack on the queen with check, and picking up the white queen on a8.

The computer is savage. It finds the most insane lines to hold things together.
