Default The everything CHESS thread

Starting this to break off of the cheating thread.

Two people have started unofficial “Calgarypuck” clubs on chess.com and lichess. Feel free to join if interested—I’ll let the founders post the links.

In the meantime there is a blitz tournament starting shortly on lichess if anyone is interested: https://lichess.org/tournament/O8YaJOXP.

Will be a range of skill levels so feel free to join whether you are a beginner or a master.

There is no judgment—none of us are GMs. (Well, not unless Eric Hansen lurks on this board). Join the club, look us up and let’s play some games.

Currently at 9 members. I'm keen for some weekly and/or intermission blitz tournaments.

May join one of these sites. It's been a LONG time since I played chess seriously (like in my 20s...which is now just shy of 50 years ago). Fortunately the game hasn't changed, but remembering openings is...um...unlikely. I did actually play pretty well back in that day. Loved speed chess: start with 5 min a side and lose a minute for every game one won.

One of the things I always find weird is chess in movies (other than The Queen's Gambit which was quite accurate in some ways). People are often depicted playing and one person moves and suddenly says "Checkmate!". Yah...it doesn't happen like that except for a Fools' Mate and that grows old at about age 6.

Speaking only for myself, I have definitely blundered check mate in one move while playing online, especially at faster time controls….

Feels like this thread is missing something. Like it has a hole that just needs to be filled.Or plugged.

This thread doesn’t ask questions about anyone’s holes, or what they choose to fill them with.

I also joined last week as Doozre. Happy to play anybody. That chess scandal got me to sign up and start playing again, and I think I've worked through most of the rust now.

I was excellent at Siamese chess but awful at traditional and speed chess.

I think I mainly joined the chess club because it was also the perfect haven for where we played trading card games. The teacher was cool with us there as long as we agreed to occasionally dabble in chess as well.

I played a few weeks last summer and determined I can beat the chess.com 1300 bot but not the 1500 bot. My buddy discussed luring me into this thing during the pandemic "to up my game":

https://playchessup.com/en-ca/products/chessup

Holy crap! That thing was like $300 USD on Kickstarter way back when. It's over $550 CAD now???? (but a huge portion of this cost is the included app/subscription cost of the app).

I was decent but haven’t played more than a couple games in the last 30 years. I should take it up again.

The Chess.com bots (you can use an app on a phone as well) are useful when getting back into it. You can figure out your level, and the bot tendencies are listed, so you can figure out certain weaknesses and tendencies you may have if you can beat a higher numbered bot, but not a lower one (ie: defensive minded, offensive minded, balanced etc.). This is especially more useful once you start playing against the intermediate bots and want to test different types of openers against those bots.

TBH, the more I played on Chess.com, the more I actually wished I knew of a Go equivalent. A few of my chess buddies told me that if I learned Go, they'd buy a really nice Go board set just so that they could play some games.

Beating the same person twice in a row is just one of the all time great feelings.
