Default NEWS: Scene+ to replace Air Miles at Safeway/Sobey's on September 22

I just got an email from Scene about this change.

https://www.safeway.ca/sceneplus/faq/

Quote:
SCENE+ IS COMING SEPTEMBER 22, 2022
TO SAFEWAY IN WESTERN CANADA

September 21st, 2022 is the last day you can Earn & Redeem AIR MILES at Safeway in Western Canada

This was announced a few months ago, but the change-over date was only a vague "before March 2023". Now, we have an official date and it's a lot sooner than that.

This is a big change for the Air Miles program. Safeway was one of the original Air Miles partners in Western Canada when the program launched in 1992.

I know a lot of people use their points to get Safeway vouchers. If this is you, make sure you do a final cash out before September 21 (the vouchers themselves won't expire).

We heard about this awhile back. Not happy about it. It's nice getting $10 off every other week. I don't really care about movie theatre points. Times get tight and a free movie doesn't do anything useful. :|

You can also use scene points at ####ty restaurants if that's your thing.

Supposedly scene will have better usability for other products and redemption..... but I guess we'll see. My only source to get airmiles now is BMO, Shell and Amazon, so good luck to that program. Time to kick it to the curb.

I got an email saying you will be able to redeem the points I think 1,000 for $10 off at Safeway.

I was just thinking of changing my VISA from a Scene VISA since I don't to as many movies, though I haven't checked the alternative redemption options. I guess I should.

Actually someone has probably looked at all the rewards programs out there and determined which card is the best, I should maybe check that out instead.

Welp, today I learned that Air Miles was still a thing until very recently.

Sure, lots of writing on the subject. But that's like saying someone has probably already researched the best vehicle - that's true, but it very much depends on your specific situation.

Fair enough, I guess it depends on if you want travel or cash back or whatever.

As a proud Nova Scotian I should be signing up and all about Scene+

However, Sobeys needs to demonstrate that Scene+ is going to be better than PC Optimum which is pretty great out here with Atlantic Superstore and Shoppers Drugmart.

Yeah, it also depends on what you spend money on and if/ how you travel.

Eg if you buy groceries at a place that takes Amex the Amex Cobalt (with 5x on groceries/restautants) is probably the best choice.

But not if you do superstore/costco (no Amex) or Walmart (which doesn't code as grocery spend).

Some cards have extra perks at specific retailers which add value depending on your shopping patterns. Eg RBC credit cards come with 3c per litre at petro can, plus you get petro points. But if you already have AMA 3x per litre at Shell plus Air Miles plus credit card points might be better.

You can keep going down the rabbit hole basically forever. Prince of Travel is a great resource for using credit card sign up bonuses/spending to take fancy trips if that's your jam.

I use my card to do online surveys and get Airmiles points. I probably get ~$120/month just from doing that. Then I use the points for gassing up at Shell and Safeway liquor store.

You could/can get wicked deals at Safeway/Sobeys liquor with AirMiles. Most weeks they'll have a $15(worth of Airmiles) if you spend $150, or $25 for spending $200. If you combine that with their 10% off buying 6+ bottles of wine plus sale prices, I could often get prices on wines that beat Costco by a pretty big margin. (basically net 25%ish off the sale price) Plus I just redeem the airmiles on the purchases themselves in cash, so not like I'm saving up for some useless airfryer or something.

I'm a frugal wine drinker / alcoholic

My wife has been collecting Air Miles since before we met 9 years ago. She has yet to use them on anything. Yet, she's obsessed with shopping at places that give out Air Miles.

I don't get it. It seems like the most useless thing on the planet. Collect points for 15 years, sometimes spending more to do so, just so you can buy an air fryer worth $150.

I've been collecting AirMiles for many years. Since Safeway announced this a couple months ago I've been using the miles to get free groceries. Prior to that I rarely used the miles. It's been a good excuse to finally put them to use. I'm almost out of miles so I'll be back to paying for groceries soon and possibly shopping elsewhere.

I’ve had my airmiles set to 100% cash miles a while ago, and have basically used them for $10 off groceries whenever I have enough.

What can I get with scene points other than movies?

PC optimum is a great points card, especially if you can in on Shopper’s “20,000” points promotions they hold frequently. I’m at $210 in points as of now which can be used at Superstore or Shopper’s.

I really miss AirMiles on prescriptions, etc. It was like 700points every few months just for the inconvenience of going in-store vs ordering from the manufacturer.

I never much cared about AirMiles since they nixed that in Alberta
