Not serious uncomfortable attack, just how I pester them as they are big santa people and big religion people lol. Anyways, the santa angle always does make them chuckle and admit that they do have zany beliefs that require totally ignoring rationality at all.

The Taiwan election is kind of out of place in this thread, but it's also interesting and relevant to show a contrast to the simplicity of the representations of APAC issues that are usually presented in the US media. Details like those shared by driveway or the actual interests of people in the business class and the working class in industries in Taiwan that export to China are often just ignored in narratives being crafted around the US vs. China rivalry or the Democracy vs. Autocracy ideology.

Those political/ideological narratives in the US have been effective domestically in motivating support for economic nationalism, but it's a problematic narrative for America overseas. The world is much more complex than portrayed in those narratives, and people in the Global South are of course smart enough to understand complexities in their own regions and their own relationships with other nations, including both the US and China.

Many interests in APAC don't like the "us or them" wedge that the US is pushing, especially as many don't perceive the US as having a persuasive vision for the international order. This is true in APAC and in other parts of the Global South.

This

https://vop.org/wp-content/uploads/2...CGOAP_0721.pdf

is an in depth survey of US voters on a wide range of national issues. I don’t know who VOP is, or their legitimacy, but their research affiliates and methodology seem legit.

I’m a little surprised by how progressive Republican voters are and it’s striking how unrepresentative the party is of its voters. The same is true of the Democrats but it’s not as pronounced. You see the legacy of the Trump disinformation machine alive and well in a bunch of these responses. But it’s reasonable to conclude, if you take these results at face value, that most Americans (meaning the ones not shrieking on social media, mostly) see through the political rhetoric and media hype. There’s a lot more common ground than the loopy ends of the spectrum want the middle to believe.

Interesting stuff (for political nerds).

There's a reason why the Affordable Heathcare Act was so universally popular, but Obamacare wasn't. The GOP are masters at getting their base to vote against their own self interest

Well I sure didn't listen to any of that, but I'm convinced. Go hard, Kari.

If I were a democrat governor in another state, I would cut and run this clip constantly as justification for cleaning up and modernizing election processes. Maybe cracking gerrymandering over the skull too.

Two Oath Keepers, including founder, found guilty of seditious conspiracy in Jan. 6 case

Quote:
WASHINGTON — A federal jury in Washington on Tuesday found Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and Kelly Meggs, another member of the far-right organization, guilty of seditious conspiracy in connection with the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Three other members of the group who were on trial alongside Rhodes and Meggs — Jessica Watkins, Kenneth Harrelson and Thomas Caldwell — were found not guilty on the seditious conspiracy charge. All five defendants were found guilty of obstruction of an official proceeding and aiding and abetting for their actions on Jan. 6.

Watkins was also found guilty on a count of civil disorder and aiding and abetting because, as she admitted on the stand, she helped push against officers inside the Capitol. Caldwell, who was also found guilty of tampering with documents or proceedings and aiding and abetting, was the only one of the five who was not detained while awaiting trial.

That’s so stupid, they were just fighting for their freedom and what they feel is a stolen election.

They conspired to oppose the peaceful transfer of power from former President Donald Trump to President Joe Biden.

How about what Rhodes said: "We should have brought rifles. We could have fixed it right then and there," Rhodes said in a Jan. 10, 2021, meeting with a man who he believed would be able to pass along a message to Trump. "I’d hang f---in’ Pelosi from the lamppost."
