Default ‘Low’ value trading cards - what/where/how to deal

Have a couple of baseball cards, pretty confident all would grade at PSA 10. Most valuable has a solid history of about $500-$600 online. Couple of others $50-80 type deal.

As I understand PSA grading is not even worth it for a few cards at a time of this value. Do any of the local traders/collectable shops offer somewhere in the middle knowing what a card will be worth to them if they go through the process? Or are these low level cards fundamentally worthless to anyone until PSA grading is performed?

Don't assume they're PSA 10's. PSA has significantly tightened up their grading standards so that they appear to be the best, toughest grader out there. Also sold prices have softened the last couple months, the economy isn't going to help that moving forward.

PSA 10's will need to be nearly perfect under magnification. And be sure to check the surface under bright magnification for scratches, dimples, marks, etc. That is the biggest one that always gets missed. Lots of veteran PSA submitters that typically hit ~75% PSA 10 rates are in the sub 30-40% lately. They are grading super tough right now.

And yes, if they're 90's cards they are virtually worthless as far as resale is concerned if they're not graded. Most 90's stuff graded PSA 8 or 9 are barely selling for the cost of grading (which is also high, but coming down slowly as the market slows down).

If they truly are PSA cards, you can submit them. They have a special on anything from 1996 to newer at $15/card (USD) as long as you submit 10 or more.

There are also lots of places that will do group submissions for you, and typically charge a small margin to allow you to submit fewer cards.

If you're looking at cards pre-2000s though, just keep in mind a PSA 10 is pretty hard to come by. Older cards almost always have issues with things like centering, edges, and surfaces, that you may not even be able to see.

There's a reason why an upper deck Ken Griffey Jr. PSA 10 rookie goes for $2000 despite the fact it's an ultra common card that goes for $50 ungraded. It's extremely difficult to find a copy that would grade a PSA 10.
