Could be a number of things. Without looking at your eyeball I ca t say definitively. There are a couple things I think of immediately though. 1) mild Rx that only bugs you when you are tired or 2) dry eyes that get better as the day goes on. Or 3) you sleep with your eyes open a bit and there is a band of dried out cornea in the morning that takes some time to re-moisturize (called Nocturnal lagophthalmus).

Best to get it checked, but you can try an OTC lubrication drop like Systane Complete first thing in the morning and see if it helps.

Hi Knut,

Thanks so much for starting this thread! As you know, vision is so important and has such a drastic effect on quality of life for people so thanks again from CP for all your contributions.

You may have answered a few questions I had a while back in a previous thread or another hockey related form, I can't recall sorry. If not, I am wondering if you can provide any guidance on an issue related to my poor Mama who's having a difficult time with her vision as a result of diabetes and high blood pressure.

She has severe diabetic retinopathy and macular edema. She has been seeing an retina specialist for a while now but the results have been mixed with monthly injections

She has fairly tight sugar and BP control and eats healthy diet rich in nutrients. I have her taking some additional supplements to maintain and hopefully improve her vision as much possible with 50mg of Lutein and cod liver oil which has a high vitamin A content of 2500 IU/daily.

Is there any other treatment options you think might be worthwhile to pursue? Any benefit to increasing the lutein intake? Any retina specialists you know in Alberta that deal with complex cases? She is only 66 and the thought her losing her vision and the effect on the family has been severe.

Thanks a million in advance for all available information you can provide!

If any CP members also have any personal experience with diabetic eye disease or have any treatment or assistance they can provide, please do!!

Many thanks to all!

I'm not an eye doctor, and don't even play one on TV, but I hope things get better for your moms.

First off, sorry to hear she is going through this. Diabetic Retinopathy can really hard to manage and requires a lot of visits to the specialist.

The big problem with Diabetic Retinopathy/Macular Edema is at a certain point it keeps getting worse even with good control. That is because of aberrant blood vessel growth that leads to constant hemorrhaging and fluid build up. Controlling sugar is part of the battle but she has to keep seeing the specialist to maintain the sight she currently has. There are treatments for this, its just they have to be done on a regular basis. You can PM me the name of the specialist if you like.

As for supplements. Make sure she is taking something with Lutein and Zeaxanthin in it. Do not exceed the daily dose however as there is some evidence it could cause blood thinning in high amounts. Better than supplements is to get it in your diet. Spinach, kale, broccoli and arugula all have high amounts of those nutrients. Omega 3's have shown little to no benefit in patients, but they generally do not cause any harm either (except in those on blood thinners).

Good luck.

I am starting to be super annoyed with the lifting of glasses to see up-close. How good are the presbyvision results? Anybody try that?

Some decent information here.

What do you value in life more ? 1) Freedom from Glasses or 2) Clear vision

Pick one. You will not get both with Presbyvision.

Thanks. Was hoping that freedom from glasses automatically meant clear vision?

It works by creating different zones in your cornea for seeing at different distances. So basically your eye recieves near and distance focus at the same time. As you can imagine this would reduce clarity a bit, especially @ night time when the oncoming headlights refract differently in different zones of the cornea.

If you really wanted to see what it would be like, get fitted for Presbyopia/Multi-focal contact lenses first. Its a reasonable approximation.

Another option is monovision. Laser one eye for distance and one eye for near.

Or... Just get Progressive Glasses and stop having to remove them @ near.

Have some questions about contact lenses. We are trying to get them for our 13 yr old son, who has worn glasses since age 6. One eye is quite a bit worse than the other. He has been test driving some contact lenses and is able to get them in and wear them for several hours. He has probably done this 4 or 5 times. However, he says his vision is still more blurry than with his glasses.

Do his eyes just need more time to adjust or is it more likely that the prescription needs to be tweaked?

Also, any recommendations for a good place to get properly fitted for contacts? (besides Costco)

Thank you for any answers.

There is a lot more information i would need to really give you a good answer.

If there quite a bit of astigmatism it is likely the vision will be better with glasses than contacts.

If the fit is poor (too flat or too steep) then the vision can also be affected.

If it is the first set he is trying then it may just be a tweak in the prescription that is required.

Costco also has a more limited selection of brands as they do not care all contact lens options. It is possible they do not have a lens that would work with him. Independent Optometry offices do not have limitations on what they can order.

Personally, I counsel that once we get comfort and fit down we can tweak the prescription as needed. Also to not expect perfection on the first try as there is an element of trial and error to contact lenses.

This is a timely bump.

Over the weekend I used a ladder and grabber stick to put Christmas lights in a number of large white spruce trees I have in my yard. Several large clumps of snow and tree debris repeatedly fell in my face (no safety glasses). My right eye ended up with quite a bit of debris in it that resulted in surprisingly little irritation. I was able to remove that fairly easily. Now last night my left eye felt bruised and this morning the eyelid is all puffy, purple, and swollen. It feels like I got a black eye. I rinsed it the best I could in the shower. Is there anything else I should do? I guess it is possible that there is something under the eyelid.

It is very likely something is under the eyelid or that you scratched the surface with some debris. Call up your local Optometrist and get an appointment today if you can. Its generally an easy fix and there is a risk of infection if it is not dealt with right away.

If you are in Alberta the visit will be covered by health care and it will be much quicker to get seen (and managed properly) than with your GP or with Walk in.

Should I get an eye exam?

I haven't had one since the 90s. My wife is constantly on my ass to get one, but I've always had near-perfect vision.

Yes. Before your eyes fall out.

Honestly, It is a good idea to get baseline health done on your eyes just like you would get baseline blood work done.

Also, appease the Wife.

The optometrists drops had me a bit blurred for maybe an hour. The opthamologists drops have me blurred and dilated for a couple of hours!

Do you still follow low-carb diet? My vision and eye-health (as well as diabetic control) seem to have gotten better since cutting out the carbs ... (aging probably also helps - I was short-sighted and I think the tendency is to become longer-sighted as we age...)

I ordered some new glasses online and made a small mistake on my prescription. Curious if this is something I should reorder, or if it’s something I won’t notice…

I have astigmatism and an axis of 050 in both eyes. For whatever reason I accidentally ordered my glasses with one eye at 050 and one at 46…. I assume when I scrolled the page, I accidentally scrolled the axis selector and didn’t notice.

Anyway, my fault, and I’m fine to reorder, but if the difference is not really noticeable I may not need to reorder.

That's probably well within the margin of error of glasses ordered online. They are notorious for being incorrect by 10-20 degrees.

Axis 46 vs 50 wont make an appreciable difference unless you have a large amount of Astigmatism.

Usually a glasses wearer out of convenience, but I find my vision is better with contacts (partly because I can never get my glasses totally spotless, also I think they are degrading over time), particularly at night. However, I don't need contacts very often, so I had assumed that I'd be a great fit for dailies (at least now that technology has improved and they are available for more prescriptions, as I have astigmatism).

I went to an optometrist who was able to find some fine monthly contacts for me, but all the dailies they tried for me were unacceptably blurry. (When I have cause to wear contacts, I need my vision to be excellent.) Couldn't get a satisfactory answer from them as to why this was the case. They also provided a prescription for both the dailies and the monthlies and while not identical, seemed pretty close. Is it just the discrepancy between prescriptions that could cause this, or what else might be going on?

Also are there any solutions you might suggest for my general use case? Will DM you some more details that are personal information.

I suspect my answer might be this one:

Spoiler!
