Default 1989 Game 6 in Montreal on right now NHL Network

Just thought I'd share. I remember watching this game live when I was 16 years old in my bedroom. What a season and what a team!

I've got that old DVD collection of classic Flames games with that game on it. I'll have to throw it in.

That second Montreal goal still infuriates me.

After play continued, Lemieux tried the same move a few minutes later. Watch for it. Vernon was spilled again.

He was a complete turd in the last few minutes of that game... including the shot and running into Vernon well after the whistle. The result was offsetting penalties which made Al MacInnis spend the remainder of regulation time in the box... taking away the experience of being on the bench/ice as the clock ran down and living it out with his teammates.

I've hated Claude Lemieux for this very reason ever since.

It's funny watching that game again, I still get nervous watching the 3rd period even though I know what the outcome is. Weird.

Still love all the smaller, skilled guys on that team.......Mullen, Hrdina, Fleury, Loob. And speaking of Mullen, that trade to Pittsburgh still stings after all these years. Loved that guy.

Sad seeing McCrimmon out there. What a warrior.

And I forgot how many Habs fans clapped and cheered when the Flames skated around with the Cup, you don't see that often at all, if ever.

Won't be deleting that one from the PVR, ever. Just wish it was the full length game.

Just FYI, the game in it's entirety is on youtube as well. The picture quality isn't the best, but it's decent (coincidentally I watched it the other day).

I'm still livid about the pick play the Habs got away with in O/T in 1986. Changed the series completely.

.
yeah each of them fell somewhere on the crazy/tough/fearless spectrum. even though Mullen and Loob were more in the lady byng category they weren't soft at all

then most of the rest of the lineup was either big, tough or both

so much balance on that team in ways that will likely never be replicated

there are certainly many NHL dynasties that were more top heavy, but very few teams (at least post original 6 and 70s Habs) that were as deep as that team...such a frigging letdown to this day that they only won once

Just look at the career season high goal totals for players on that roster:

Fleury = 51
Gilmour = 42
M. Hunter = 44
Loob = 50
MacInnis = 28
MacLellan = 32
McDonald = 66
Mullen = 51
Nieuwendyk = 51
Otto = 25
Patterson = 22
Peplinski = 30
Roberts = 53
Suter = 23

That team should have been good for 2-3 more cups.

Yep, that was interference by Lemieux on Tonelli. My father tells me that should've been called.

I always enjoy comparing and contrasting the 86 and 89 SC Finals. I know some Habs fans who say the same thing about being nervous watching game 5 of the 86 finals.

Kootenay, watching video and asking people who were at the Saddledome, lots of Flames fans also clapped and cheered when the Habs celebrated with the Cup.

I was in the Saddledome for Game 5 in 1986. The crowd did indeed clap & cheer respectively for Montreal as the were presented the Stanley Cup.

Just watched this on the PVR last night. Holy crap, #### Claude Lemieux.

This is actually the first game I ever remember watching as a kid, but I was too young to be invested enough in it to be watching closely like that. If I were even a couple years older, I would've despised that clown from that point on his entire career.

And Gilmour is so clutch. Sad he left less than 3 years after that, what a beauty.

Doug Gilmour should be considered one of the all time great Flames.
Instead he chose to quite on his team-mates mid-season.
Unforgiveable
But he, in my view, should have won the Conn Smythe that year.

He was great no doubt, but chopper was the guy IMO...IIRC he led the entire squad in scoring while playing huge minutes against every teams top lines.

Mullen was fantastic that year as well.

So many great choices.
What a team.
The other factor with Chopper is he clearly got in Roy's head. In some ways, that defined the series.
But Gilmour's two way play was just outstanding.
Either are certainly valid choices.
