They will probably be getting 10 cents on the dollar because of escrow as it's a gate driven league. Not sure how much interest they will have putting future contracts on the line for a fraction of their salary. I think playing empty arenas is a pipe dream and will only happen if both sides are desperate. Next time we see hockey there will be fans in the stands. I think there's a good chance there is no hockey until 21/22

I am honestly surprised at how little I miss sports. I miss baseball most of all right now, mostly for the Jomboy breakdowns.

Larry OB: Toronto Raptors
Super Bowl: Kansas City Chiefs
Stanley Cup: St Louis Blues
World Series: Washington Nationals

No wonder the world's ending.

TV contracts pay about 20% of player wages, the numbers don't work. Only a miracle or vaccine will
Your points are comparing TV revenue and empty arenas to the norm, not to what we're facing now. The norm is out the window so the only question is what can be done now.

Of course athletes don't like playing in front of no one, but it's better than not playing at all.

Of course 20% TV revenue sucks, but it's better than 0%.

Sports will be played in a limited way for many reasons of damage limitation.

Let's move the Stanley cup to Esports where the rest of the year is played out but each team having to rotate the players (the actual team's players) having to play each game, and create some kind stream of it.

As a fan, I would pay a subscription to watch that.
You'd be the only one.

I think if the US had a real leader instead of some narcissistic a-hole there would be a good chance we could even get this current season in eventually but with Trump wanting everything to go back to status quo by Easter I am losing hope.

This season was done long before that.

If some of the Covid projected scenarios are accurate, there is a fairly good chance the 20/21 season doesn’t start on time.

But it could be possible to get things going by next Feb/March with a brief training camp to get players back to fitness.

If so, would it be possible to pick up then where we’ve left now?

I don't think that would go over too well with teams not in the race. Here play 12 meaningless games and then take another 6 months off

Well, they’d get gate and tv money that wouldn’t otherwise happen because there is no way you could start a season then.

They're being optimistic IMO. Plus, who cares what the NHL thinks, I'll listen to scientists and medical professionals, and my understanding is this could easily stretch into 2021... however, we can't stall the economy for that long, so I really don't know what will happen here.

Science and common sense says this season is done, playing hockey without fans is ridiculous and a non starter IMO, our favorite sport(s) are seriously in the hands of the worlds best scientists trying to vaccinate COVID-19. Lets face facts, without a vaccine we are done!!!!!!!!!

This thread is amazing, I created it 10 days ago when North America had a few hundred cases a hand full of deaths, now its a nightmare with 130,000 and 2300 dead and some arseholes including the NHL brass still think we'll have a 19-20 season finish.

Amazing is actually an understatement. forget 19-20 and as I said, hope for a miracle for a 20-21 season.

Well if the NHL thinks so.

Dont confuse being realistic for pessimism.

It's not about optimism vs pessimism, it's about facts.

And the messaging from the leagues and the NHL is going to be on the optimistic side of being able to resume in the near future. There's a lot of money that's going to be lost, and they will not say anything about pulling the plug, until the very last second where it's not possible.

I'm fairly pessimistic on the NHL and NBA resuming their seasons. But I'm optimistic that they'll resume on their normal schedule in the fall. I also believe summer sports like baseball and golf will resume in the summer at some point. However based on logistics, if it goes on too late, there is a possibly that MLB may think it's too late, and call it a lost season.

We can't possibly know the facts though. Is the season over? Probably. Could we get this thing under control enough to fit it in? Possibly. Who knows how this will go, there are so many factors with isolation, medical discoveries, empty buildings. If the sports leagues think they can find a way you can bet they will try.

How do they get this under control without a vaccine? If they open up the economy it will be another wave again. China is still seeing new cases and they've been in lockdown for over two months, the US hasn't even begun one yet.

I don’t believe that’s true about China. They’ve had several new cases in past few days but I believe all but one were travelers who brought it in from elsewhere.

And hundreds of millions of Americans are on lockdowns right now.
