You know if my house had no heat, no electricity and it's -10 in Houston. I think I'm just driving somewhere, anywhere, maybe to Florida. Am i crazy?

He’s sadly right in a way. Ask most who went through the 2013 flood how much the city or province rode to the rescue.

I pumped my house out and ate food donated by my wonderful Calgarians. Meanwhile I was treated to a city water worker who showed up once, basically shrugged and moved along. Then the military came to...drive by my street shrug and move on.

This guy shouldn’t have said it, but let me be clear. Your relatively Socialist government here in Canada with do jack all for you in a disaster. Be prepared.

Yes you're crazy. They don't have plows, the don't put sand or salt on the road, the don't have winter tires, most don't have much winter driving experience.

I wasn’t a fan of either the federal or provincial governments in power during the 2013 floods but I think it’s unfair to suggest that they did nothing. It’s also pretty unreasonable to base your argument that our governments will do nothing for people in a disaster on an anecdotal example of a time when it sounds like you had the means to not need to rely on their assistance. It also kinda gives the impression that you’re expecting a hand out when you may not have needed one.

This definitely seems like the most logical solution for those with enough money for a couple hotel nights. Looking at the weather forecast the south will be +15-20C in a few days anyways though so most just need to hunker down for one more night.

I certainly don’t expect government employees to show up at my house and hold my hand immediately. I doubt most others do.

And why is it ‘my’ socialist government? Where do you live?

Yes, you would be crazy because I-20 across Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi is a disaster (I've seen the pictures).

This ####er.

Republican Rick Perry, a former Texas governor and energy secretary, suggested in a recent blog post on House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s website that Texans should be more than willing to endure blackouts to keep the federal government from regulating the state’s power grid.

“Texans would be without electricity for longer than three days to keep the federal government out of their business,” Perry said. “Try not to let whatever the crisis of the day is take your eye off of having a resilient grid that keeps America safe personally, economically, and strategically.”

Pfffft, just fly to Cancun. Not sure how Ted Cruz thought this was going to go down any differently?

I think you are giving too much credit to the average home owner. I would be surprised if half the home owners knew how to shut off their water or if they could actually access their valve.

The way houses in Texas are built, there probably isn't a shutoff. Sort of joking, but from what I understand the quality of construction in Texas is about as bad as it gets in the US. Codes are barely enforced and it shows.

If I lived in a place that had a history of power outages Id definitely have a large house generator attached to my gas supply added onto the cost of purchase. Feel bad for these people.

My sister lives there, and the last house she rented was a 5000sq ft. monster that was built in 2015. It was falling apart the whole time they were in there.

Here is a very stupid question...

If your house is going below freezing, or at risk of.. you would NOT want to shut off the water pre-burst, only leave flow on a small stream through your taps (or a high tap) as discussed elsewhere... right?

Shutting off the water would only occur if a pipe did burst, correct? Because if you shut off the water pre-burst, you could not drain your pipes anyway and keeping it flowing keeps warmer water entering the house from the water main?

Or, could you shut off water pre-burst, open a low elevation outside tap and backward drain the pipes outside?

This.

There is a reason houses are so cheap in the Greater Houston Area.

The slow trickle technique is a good one to avoid freezing your lines.

But if you shut off the water at the incoming, and open all your taps, the pressure will bleed off as well as push water through as some parts start to freeze. Allowing space for expansion, and likely avoiding a complete burst.
