I think there's a lot of competition for this coveted spot. My first contenders would be Ruslan Zainullin, the entire 2006 draft class or Andrei "Cheeseburger" Medvedev.

Hindsight being 20/20 with draft picks, it's a dumb exercise when some random pick way later is the "obvious" choice... but when 3 of the 4 immediate picks after are legit... you blew it big time.
|
Brayden Point too, and I believe quite a few on here wanted him badly.
Smith was just as much a disaster pick as Kanzig the year before. Glad the fixation on size seems to no longer be there right now.

Hey at least they nailed it with Mason MacDonald instead of taking the higher ranked Demko

You would think NHL teams would avoid drafting monster sized forwards (6'6"+) just as they seem to avoid drafting smaller players (though it seems that is starting to thankfully reverse).

Tre was GM at the 2014 draft, but I'm guessing Burke had the hand that draft. No wonder he went with truculence with Smith
I expect Shore to be back, surprised about Shinkaruk

Very surprised they kept Shinkaruk.
I am excited to see Klimchuk this upcoming season. Hopefully, he can get into some games.

You probably confused him with Kanzig, the refrigerator we drafted the year prior.

I don't mind picking the big guys with later picks where you are just throwing a dart but it's simply not good use of a pick in the top four rounds.

2013 wasn't a whole lot better, outside of Monahan of course.
1-6 C Sean Monahan
1-22 LW Emile Poirier
1-28 LW Morgan Klimchuk
3-67 D Keegan Kanzig
5-135 D Eric Roy
6-157 RW Tim Harrison
7-187 D Rushan Rafikov
7-198 D John Gilmour
Only Monahan and Klimchuk left now. They only got 8 games out of Poirier, none of the others. Roy, Harrison and Gilmour were never signed, Kanzig couldn't stick in the AHL. I guess they technically still have Rafikovs rights, but that ship surely has sailed. Gilmour played 28 NHL games with the Rangers last season though, good for him.
For a hugely important draft with three 1sts, that's kind of weak. Interestingly the other team with three 1sts that year, Columbus, didn't strike gold either. They only have Wennberg left, both Rychel and Dano were traded and haven't done a whole lot at the NHL level.

I know nothing about the player but Florida just picked Noel Serron 34th overall. So not sure if teams have learned anything.

The thread made for when he was selected was overwhelmingly positive at the time.

The draft is always about taking shots. There is a definite risk vs reward. Problem with these monster players is it tough to get a good read as they can physically dominate their competition in junior. Harder when you start playing playing more physically developed in the minors.

Hunter Smith especially, being that he was an overager as well.

Poor Daniel Pribyl never got a break. Never really got a good gauge on what he could've done in the organization.

iirc he was actually ranked pretty highly so not like it was a crazy reach. Coming off a memorial cup win probably helped

Probably because he's a massive dude and at that time the team was on the small side. I don't think he was considered a massive reach or anything either as he was a bi of a rising player going into the draft. Really he was made to order for Brian Burke so it wasn't overly surprising the Flames picked him.

I think there were rumours or mock drafts that had the Aves taking him late in the first.
