I usually dismiss a lot of stuff as corporations caving into nonsensical internet outrage but there is something wrong with this guy. Normal people don't make those types of tweets. What a weirdo.

When I first heard this news I expected to read about some vengeful conservatives getting wound-up over some off-colour, edgy jokes they wouldn't be able to understand.

However, that isn't edgy. That isn't clever. That isn't even remotely funny. It's dumb, juvenile, and as Erick Estrada said, just plain weird and disturbing. How does he not purge old posts and tweets? How does Disney fail so hard in their due diligence?

It's a shame, because 2 shining gems of the MCU were both GOTGs. They were also a major highlight in Infinity War. Gunn played a big role in that.

I'm sure Disney knew but didn't care until it got wide public attention.

If they did, they would be foolish not to demand he delete them.

I don't use Twitter but apparently his tweets were re-tweeted to Disney and Marvel at the time. So they knew. Also you think Disney should have just had Gunn delete the tweets and not fire him instantly?

Depends what kind of PR hit they were willing to take in order to get 'their guy' for the films.

And it’s worth noting the landscape of social media has changed considerably even in the 5 years since he was hired

I'm more or less in the same boat, I mean, they're tweets, they're vile, but they're tweets and they're really old and coming from someone who was just trying to get a reaction. Well, mission accomplished.

I dont agree with it and I dont like it, but this is the narrative of being in the public eye these days.

While true, this statement is very broad. In what sense do you mean as it applies to Gunn's situation?

Has anyone watched the recent Panorama documentary on the Trump sexual assault allegations? Really makes you think had he not become president he would have fallen the hardest of all the predators.

Posts 2, 4 and 5 (and many after that) of the Inspired by Iceland thread were cringe-worthy. Have things changed that much in just a few years, or were those posts questionable at the time too?

(not sure if this is the place for this, but seemed as good as anywhere).

Depends on how you define it. Stuff like that was always gross (post 5, wtf) but it’s become less and less accepted and there’s a heightened awareness around it now where people are less afraid to call it out (and it actually has consequences).

Yeah the concept of wanting to visit another country because they have beautiful women is incredibly creepy and completely unacceptable. Trying to sell tourism based on a man’s ability to meet pretty women is disgusting. Like you said, thankfully going on vacation to meet women is less accepted though and it’s getting called out.

Two problems with this:

1) Gunn publicly acknowledged and apologized for the tweets in 2012.

2) The "backlash" came from Mike Cernovich and his raving alt-right lunatic fans. Everyone knows they couldn't care less about what Gunn tweeted - hell, most of them have written an awful lot worse, and Cernovich himself has written at least one article bragging about forcing himself on a woman. The idea behind this is not to make people who express these opinions accountable for them, but to weaponize #MeToo against anyone they see as an enemy of their cause.

Did he apologize for the tweets specifically? From what I’ve read he apologized for a blog post, but not the tweets which might have even continued after the apology.

http://comicbook.com/marvel/2018/07/...ly-apologized/

There’s little doubt this is because they feel he has maligned Trump. Ted Cruz has gone as far as saying Gunn should be prosecuted for his tweets. As bad as his jokes are I don’t see how they can be considered criminal.
