Flying to Arizona this afternoon. A week of biking in Phoenix and Tuscon on the horizon.

What are you guys using to lubricate your chains in this weather? I've noticed I'm getting more corrosion than I'd like. One of the wet lubes from MEC, or something else?

I use Squirt, it's wax based. I know it is not great in this stuff, but I hate hate hate oily chains and I'm willing to deal with a chain going south on me to not have to deal with it. So I now buy $15 chains, accept that they last a season, and just replace them. I apply lube about once a week, and if it is really wet, slushy snow, 2 or 3 times.

Thanks. Yeah, the guys that put the winter tires on did a good job of greasing it up, and I have been putting on all in one oil, but I'm with you on not liking it too greasy.

I am also starting to reconsider using my hybrid bike in the winter. Not only does the riding seem to be really hard on it, but I've been bringing my bike into work on the back of my car. I'm actually going to take it to the car wash today to wash the bike, then put the bike inside for the ride home.

Acceptance is your biggest ally with winter riding. I accept that my bike is going to take a beating, and all parts are replaceable. Nothing is sacred. It's a 20 year old bike. I buy low to mid-end parts for that reason. But it's not an excuse for riding a total beater you let fall apart, either. As soon as it is nice enough I'll give her a good cleaning, replace what is needed, and be good for the summer.

You'll need to be extremely careful with high-pressure washers....you can force the grease out of hubs, bottom brackets etc.

This cold is taking a toll on both body and equipment. My awesome headlight that has been great for the last two years suddenly went into strobe mode halfway through my ride. Couldn't get it to switch back to beam, turned it off and my little backup light was frozen and not responsive. So I strobed a bit of the rest of my ride and turned it off once on 12th street. I'm hoping a recharge tonight fixes it.

Amazing how much heat the body creates when riding. always a balance to stay warm but not go into total meltdown mode.

Ya, it's tough. My ride starts through a valley where the cold air settles, often 5°C colder than everywhere else, and since I am also cool form not having warmed up yet, it's tough to dress for that then not overheat once I hit the climb. More of an issue when the temps are -5ish though, or when I'm debating shorts(those were the days!).

When fall hit and we had temps around +5 to +10 I had everybody saying "you must enjoy it being cooler now." They seem shocked when I tell them that I preferred +30- that it's simple, shorts and a shirt.

These days I think I need an inventory checklist to make sure I have all the layers I need.

My least favourite parts of the day are getting dressed up. The ride, I don't mind. It's the prep and the layers. I just love being able to throw shorts,a tshirt, socks and shoes on, and roll.
