Default Business Attire Advice

Hello all. I am searching for a job. I have worked from home for about 10 years so I am feeling a bit out of touch with what is appropriate business attire downtown these days.

I would need to give my wardrobe an immediate infusion and would love some advice on how to go about it. Needless to say, the cost is a primary concern. I would also like to get stuff that is able to be worn regularly in an office environment. I am a lawyer but would likely be in an in-house counsel role.

I am thinking 2-3 suits and shirts.

Where to go? What to buy?

Thanks for the advice.

From the off topic index, double click the row (not the text) that the thread appears on.

I would advise against wearing a tire.

i would say one really nice suit, and a few shirts and ties. Even for 2nd interviews we don't remember if you wore the same suit, but we do remember colors.

Go to one the fine men's shops in the Core, and get two quality suits. Check which shops are having a sale. Buy your shirts at The Bay and not from the men's shop.

So you work from home and you're voluntarily going back into an office?

Did you just have a kid or something? You're out! Why go back?!?

And you should always have a spare Flames jersey at the office. Trust me, that one has saved me on numerous occasions.

Well, he did say he wants to work as "in-house counsel". I assume that's where you live in the office, so he's obviously been evicted.

I bought a few suits from RW & CO. They are not super expensive but get the job done. It all works out if the suit fits right and the brand doesn't matter too much imo.

I hate wearing ties so normally never do it. I would be curious how many people on here who hire care if a candidate is wearing a tie or not? Am I doing something wrong by wearing a suit with no tie?

Banana Republic when it's 40% off is good for shirts.

Let's just say it is not voluntary. But paying for kids is a good motivator.

Blue for sure but what about black or gray? Or just different blue suits?

Also, thinking about just rotating plain white and blue shirts to keep things simple.

Suggestions for shops that will not kill the budget?

Ok, think of his as an investment.

I know people who swear that an investment in interview attire pays off 2x-10x. Basically if you look the part they will pay you the part.

So, go to O’Connors for one good suit that fits you and let them them tailor it to fit perfectly. The process to find a suit you like and looks good on you will talk 60-90 minutes and you’ll need to try on a half dozen suits. .

Get new and good shoes that match that suit. Again, a good pair will last years and a cost per use is low compared to cheap shoes.

Once you land the job go back to o’connors And get two pairs of dress pants and a blazer and you’re set.

Dress shirts can be bought from the bay as can ties, but they don’t hold up for long. Brooks brothers non-iron shirts pay off pretty quick and look good.
Good luck.

Can't comment on the suit quality, but for decent budget dress shirts/pants/ties Van Huesen (sp?) in Crossiron is decent.

The Bay and Moores often have really good sales (50% off suits and ties and shirts)

Get a navy blue suit, black suit and a dark or light grey suit.

Get a couple of white and blue shirts and a few ties.

Consider if you're just going to wear black shoes all the time or also want a bpair of brown shoes for the navy blue and grey suits.

I started wearing a pocket square and tie clip a year ago (can be ######y on some people) but I really like the look.

Black suits traditionally shouldn’t be worn as business attire, they are for evening wear or funerals.

To build a wardrobe I’d start with a classic navy suit and another grey or charcoal. Avoid pinstripes or overly noticeable patterns. If you want to incorporate a loud pattern, do so with a sports jacket or two. For shoes I’d go with one black pair and a brown pair - one of which brogued and the other just a plain captoe oxford.

Also, avoid the trend of hemming your dress slacks short to show off wacky pattern socks.

2 good suits one black and one dark blue.

1 more casual suit or a sports coat and two pairs of pants.

Enough shirts for a week, I make sure I have solid colors and at least a couple of good whites, all long sleeve, I'm into french cut with cuffs.

Always have a few ties just in case, nothing crazy pattern wise.

A couple of outfits that are definately business casual, khaki's and nice button ups.

Oh and something crazy for whacky tacky tie day (Family guy represent)

That is very interesting. I always wear black suits to work and have never been told that before. But Google says you are right.

I like wearing my black suit though.
