It's like HBO. It's just better than ad based TV. I also like that hockey writers can make a living doing it.
I'm not a huge advanced stats guy (mostly I'd like to see an article on how past players like Kent Nilsson would be judged using them - was he a "darling" like Hamilton?), so Kent Wilson isn't really my cup of tea, but I also find value there with different perspectives.
To have such easy access to really high quality writing for so many teams is super awesome. Especially when it's all in an app, instead of surfing around google.
|
I am still anti-paywall. I do have a subscription to The Athletic and I think it is work it though. I'd pay for Athletic again, but probably nothing else.

Received a subscription for Christmas, and I enjoy it very much... particularly the daily updated NHL projections. Suppose if I were an Oilers fan, I wouldn't like those updates daily.
The ability to customize the content and follow my favourite teams on easy to use apps works nicely too.

I like it. I guess my only gripe is that I burn through the articles I'm interested on my teams and it can take days for new ones to trickle in.

I have to agree. One of his latest articles about accessing the Flames trade assets ahead of the deadline he whines about Peters "strange ambivalence" to Frolik and kind of dumps on Jankowski. It's not a bad article but he's got that Larry Brooks kind of negative vibe to some of his writing.

Well on Jankowski it’s kinda true. While being an excellent PK and showing flashes of potential he’s been mediocre 5-5 this season. He’s constantly getting hemmed in his zone. I wouldn’t mind flipping Bennett and his positions on that line.

I am pleasantly surprised by how good it is. (The Athletic)
It would be nice to see more content on the Stampeders.

He said Jankowski was expendable compared to Frolik which I totally disagree with. When you compare salaries Jankowski is providing better value as his work on the penalty kill adds as much or more to the team than anything Frolik is adding on the wing. Flames are heading to a point where salary cap space is going to be tight and players like Bennett and Jankowski are better options than Frolik at his $4.3 million cap hit. It's pretty obvious he's a big Frolik fan which is fine but he's probably going to have to come to terms with the fact Frolik isn't long for this team as if he's not traded in the offseason it's not likely he's a Flame after his deal expires.

Really good article by Duha on Johnny today:
https://theathletic.com/792495/2019/...hnny-gaudreau/
Quote:
“I can tell you this: Johnny wants to lead the league in scoring. He won’t tell you that, but in his mind, that’s what he wants to do. He’s going to say it doesn’t matter, but I think he wants to win a Stanley Cup and he wants to be the best player in the league. That’s what he wants – and I hope he can do it here.”

Yes, it was Conroy. There are some great quotes in the article from Gio, Conroy, Gelinas, etc.
I liked this one from Joe Colborne:
Quote:
Above all, said Colborne, Gaudreau never lost his likeability, internally, within the dressing room, even as his fame, notoriety and influence grew.
“The thing with Johnny is, he doesn’t have a single pretentious bone in his body,” said Colborne. “He was the best teammate, even as a rookie. I remember Burkie (former GM Brian Burke) saying a typical Burkie thing to him, something like, ‘I don’t want to hear your voice until we reach Christmas,’ or something like that. He’d tell him, ‘your job is to smile, listen to your captain and listen to your veterans.’ Within two weeks, Johnny is the guy that all the older guys are chirping and having the best time with him. He has that infectious kind of glue quality, where you just want to be around him.”

I don't mind Wilson. I think he's probably the worst flames writer and I skim most of his articles rather than read them. But he's ok.
My biggest gripe is Corey Wrongman. That guy just produces noise. Like seriously, how much stock are we supposed to put into one guy that covers 900+ prospects and all the NHL players. And he's so confident in his analysis and how his rankings are really good and how he then uses his "amazing" list to talk about trades involving a prospect component.
I honestly don't get what his job is suppose to accomplish because the informational value of what he does is 0.

I like all of the Flames' Athletic writers. Haynes is fantastic in all aspects, Cruickshank is a great story-teller, Wilson offers an analytic take, and Duhatschek is a legend in reporting.
It's worth every penny.

Every now and then they tell you a story you had no idea that you wanted to hear.
Say what you will about the pay wall, but after looking of sportsnet and their ungodly advertising and formatting, I might never return to their site.
The Athletic is modern sports journalism for modern fans.

Great Haynes article in The Athletic today that discusses 'perhaps skewed' expectations.
Bang on, as usual.
