I had a random thought when I was at the airport last night.
As of now, when you drive through it goes from D down to A.....What are they gonna do with the letters once the new terminal is done?

So what becomes of the Air Canada / Westjet international flight gates? Do they all just turn into domestic?

I suspect the current transborder gates on Pier B/C will get heavily renovated once the IFP is up and running and those new gates are being used for all international and US bound flights.
With the renovations to A pier, and D being relatively new B/C is arguably the worst pier at the airport right now.

After the new terminal opens up, the B/C pier will be renovated. It will be used for domestic flights, but it might not need to be used much. It could be used as alternative space to allow upgrades to other parts of the terminal.

Perhaps WestJet Encore and Air Canada Express can share a heavily renovated B/C pier for all their Q400's? It does feature easy access to either A and D pier without having to leave the secured area for connecting passengers.

I would argue that there is no argument. B/C is cramped, lacks amenities, and looks like it was thrown together as a piecemeal afterthought.
Speaking of which, I don't recall if it was ever any different. Was it ever an open concourse before the divider between the International and US sides was added in? Or is that how it was since day one?

Is there any way to find out what new routes or perspective airlines will move in once YYC has the new space.
Specifically I'm hoping Alaska Air takes a greater presence (more than just horizon).

Realistically I don't think much will change, the new runway and terminal are needed as the capacity just isn't there with the current terminal and facilities.
YYC has actually seen some reductions in international/transborder services, however transborder numbers are up this year but international is down.
Here are the passenger stats as of September 2012:
Domestic: Up 5.7%
Transborder: Up 7.8%
International: Down 2.9%
You can see month to month and some charts of all of this here:

why would you build a hotel right at the airport? it's so far away from anything that people flying here come for, and with no transit options to the airport other than the taxi i can't see why anyone would stay there

Not sure if this is their core audience, but I've had to stay at the airport hotels a few times over the years because of missed-connections etc, and the airline putting me up for the night.
Also, I'm sure guys like Bigtime would plan a weekly romantic getaway right above all that airport action.

I never even thought of that! However with the view from the new hotel I think she'd be upset with me glued to the window, camera in hand!
As for why have a hotel at the airport many have already mentioned the perfectly reasonable reasons why. Those reasons are also why there are so many hotels around the area of the airport, with more being built as we speak (or recently completed).
I even know of some Calgary residents that will stay overnight if they have real early flights, instead of chancing the Deerfoot the morning of the flight.

Who needs a "she" when Bigtime has an airport view and a camera? That's plenty of romance.

There's going to be a massive four-building Hilton hotel complex going up next to the airport too... plus, another hotel at the current airport (which will be coming later) in addition to the one already being built at the new terminal.
Interesting times there, that's for sure. Now all they need is a direct LRT connection.

The romance of flight.
Edit: Muta, the first of that four building Hilton complex is already up quite a bit, it's just north of the Park2Go lots:

I do believe the current Delta Airport Hotel will be closing when the new one opens up in the new terminal.
