There is a reason election campaigns have to be at least 5 weeks. This gives the electorate plenty of time to learn what each candidate is offering.
It's also why I have trouble respecting anyone that states: "I always vote for ______" or "I didn't have enough information on who was running".

You make a really good point about advanced polls. That said, it felt like this election campaign was so long and we had enough history on the incumbents like Chu that it really shouldn't have moved the needle, he should have been no one's first choice even before the story dropped. The publication ban being lifted just before the election was definitely a curve ball that no one expected.

I would say that ward 4 is now the Alabama of Calgary, but even they didn't actually elect the sex offender

Craig Chandler is losing his mind and going off on people on Facebook.
He even commented on Steven Phan's concession / congratulations post to Evan Spencer. The "Tom" is in reference to Tom Kmiec.

It's weird. It seems he was granted an interview with Chu, but then the whole article seems like an excuse and downplay of everything. This is journalism these days? Maybe ask some questions, like if it is true he knew her from when she was 14? Why the other story is the Husky House, with Chu being called there by another officer? Was that made up, or was that other underage girl you drove home?
This feels like he was given a platform to downplay it.

No. This is The Western Standard.

That's exactly what it is. There's a reason it's in the Western Standard and not a mainstream media outlet.

I won my municipal election here in Northern Alberta. 168 votes to 167 votes.
What a thrill ride!

Part of me wants to sh-t-talk Chandler on Steven Phan's post, and part of me knows that if he shows up at my house again that I'm going to need to pay to get the porch slab lifted from the weight of his chins.

Yes, we should change the clocks back earlier in the fall and later in the spring, and we did before 2007! We used to change clocks on the first Sunday in April and last Sunday in October. The US unilaterally decided to change it to the second Sunday in March and first Sunday in November, adding another 4-5 weeks of daylight time in the calendar. Canada and Mexico followed only to keep in sync with them.
This year we "sprang forward" on March 14, making sunrise jump from 6:51 to 7:51 am, and sunset from 6:40 to 7:40 pm. We will "fall back" on November 7, making sunrise shift from 8:39 to 7:39 am, and sunset from 5:59 to 4:59 pm.
If we kept daylight saving time the same as it was prior to 2007, we would have changed on April 4, making sunrise from 6:04 to 7:04 am and sunset 7:14 to 8:14 pm, and October 31, making sunrise from 8:27 to 7:27 am and sunset from 6:11 to 5:11 pm.

It’s funny as I’m the opposite. I hate waking up with the sun out. I enjoy it being dark in the morning and giving my eyes a while to adjust. When I wake up sun booming I feel like I’ve slept in. When I wake up and it’s dark I feel like I’m being an “early riser”.

From r/Calgary, a ward 4 resident admitting why he voted for Chu
Quote:
Using a throwaway for this because I don't want this linked back to me as I am rather embarrassed.
I didn't look him up before hand. I had already spent a long time researching who to vote for mayor, and all the other questions, that I forgot about looking up councillors. When I went to vote, I saw his name, knew he was the incumbent and went "I don't think I have any problems with him"
Later last night I googled him out of curiosity and have been regretting it ever since, especially with how close of a vote it turned out to be.

You have to think that around 80% of his voters had a similar thought process, or at least didn't know anything about the scandal.

There were tons of "Joe Must Go" type signs around my neighbourhood, many handmade, many in front of his signs. If you had any interest at all you would have know about the fraud thing. But the chu story was pretty late breaking. If it had been even 24 hours earlier I think he would have lost.

I still don't understand how this creep was elected in 2013. No one leaked this story to the press at all? In what public interest was a publication ban in place that allowed him to run for higher office to start with?

There is absolutely no question that another 24 hours would have made the difference. I doubt it would have even been close.

It will be interesting to see the breakdown between the advance and mail-in votes vs. election day votes for Ward 4.
