I believe a team can terminate a contract for cause in cases of material breach.
An example of this was Mike Richards, I think.

He won't get a dime from the Sharks as they have reasonable cause to terminate his contract.

Whether the NHL grants cap relief is a completely separate issue.

As a part time sharks fan (living down here and kids love them) what a bloody cloud this guy imparts over the team. The team looks to be at least having some fun again. What happens when this guy is Wifi Le to play again? ####show.

Don't be so sure. Lots of time left. I would bet Sharks terminate his contract somehow.

November 16, 2012: Evander Kane’s time in the KHL lasted just 12 games as Dinamo Minsk and the forward “mutually” parted ways in November. Kane had scored one goal and no assists in those games, and was a minus-12.

“Unfortunately, Evander Kane could not adapt to hockey in the KHL,” athletic director Igor Matushkin said on the team’s website as Kane’s departure was announced.

I think all they can do is waive him and then tell him not to report. Doubt that they can terminate the contract (without his agreement) at this point. They can then buy him out at the next opening. I have nothing to back this up.

Flames should buy low and have them retain salary. Nobody believe in 5th chances anymore around here?

They have reasonable cause to terminate his contract and refuse to pay him anything. Faking a vaccine record is a safety issue, and I highly doubt there's an arbitrator or employment judge that would rule in his favour. He would have been far better off just refusing to get vaccinated and letting the NHLPA fight for him.

We'll see. From the sounds of it no one on the Sharks want him back and I doubt there is a trade market for him, you'd think they would immediately terminate the contract if they could.

On a side note (saw this elsewhere), was the NHL trolling him with a "21" game suspension?

If you need a bigger trainwreck to distract yourself from this trainwreck, there will always be Evander Kane.

Sharks players don't want him back. The veterans are done with him. After this 21 games, there will be a resolution where he is no longer on the team.

Sad thing is some team where nobody cares about hockey will pick him up for nothing and he will put up 60 points

I might have missed it, but please tell me there's more consequences for faking a vaccine card than a 21 game suspension?! I mean, there's got to be legal consequences for something like that.

as for his career, I doubt we'll see him in the NHL again.

And rip his new dressing room apart like he has at every team he has been on.

on TSN they said the COVID violation is not grounds for terminating the contract. the suspension is the punishment.

They speculated the Sharks might waive and send Kane to the AHL or just put him on paid leave.

That sucks for SJ that they will be dragging that cap hit around with no way of getting out of it.
