I would be waiting for them with a couple of LAV's fully loaded and a couple of squads of infantry, and the bushmaster cannon wouldn't be loaded with blanks.
They want to ensure their criminal cross border smuggling operations continues unimpeded.
They should have run down the warrior society years ago.

The Mohawks say they don’t want armed guards at the post because it would violate their sovereignty and increase the likelihood of violent confrontations.

So... to oppose the potential likelihood of a violent confrontation, they threaten the guarantee of a violent confrontation?

Lure them in, and then nuke them from space.
Its the only way to be sure.

Is there any chance that Daniel Day-Lewis is posted at this border crossing?

Exactly! If the border guards don't have guns there won't be a violent confrontation with armed Mohawks smuggling ciggarettes into Canada.

Haha. Well, the RCMP must know who they are and they must know that they are caught on tape uttering threats. Why haven't they been arrested yet?

Wouldn't it be better for everybody if we gave the First Nation a true nation and end the Indian Affairs debacle. This thing has not worked out since day one. Sad but true.

Judging by the way the tribal councils treat their own, we would essentially be dooming the average aboriginal to something 10x worse than the third world existence they have now with our tax dollar.
Then figure the issues of picking nations, would they still be the reserves, would certain groups demand to consolidate? How would hundreds of little countries survive if the major country than encompasses them doesn't want to deal with them anymore? How would they get food/power/water? If we had to help them, would they even be sovereign? Would you want a backwater and potentially aggressive nation bordering two of your most important cities?
The problem is absolutely colossal, and would take a radical change in the politics and society of Canada to even consider a real solution, the most likely of which would be an abolishment of reserves and establishment of cultural museums/protections, etc..
As for this Mohawk problem, the solution is obvious. They understand one thing. Making demands on a country under threat of force is essentially terrorism (use of intimidation or violence to exert decision making influence on state bodies). I'd refuse to negotiate with them, and bring in a couple thousand reserve soldiers and local Special Weapons and Tactics teams armed to the teeth and force their withdrawal, capitulation and disarmament. National Security isn't something Canada can afford to play fast and loose with. These guys want to be a serious threat, treat them as such.

I think that the opposite should happen. Its time to kill the reservation system and integrate them into Canadian Society.
All we're doing is enabling poverty for the lower classes on the reserve while giving money to a rich few who abuse it as they see fit.

Border guards leave eastern Ontario post
Canadian border guards abandoned their posts early Monday at a U.S. border crossing at Cornwall, Ont., after talks broke down with Mohawk officials over the arming of border guards.
Reports say roughly 400 Mohawks camped out near the building cheered when news of the departure became known.
On Saturday, about 200 Akwesasne Mohawks marched on the Canadian Border Offices in Cornwall Island shouting "No guns." The demonstration briefly held up border traffic but the bridges were not closed.

Thats such the wrong move.
They're going to have to find a way to enforce that border crossing in force now.

I am a little torn about it. We all know what these extremists are capable of. They are in a dangerous situation and if 400 of them were camped outside your office you would probably not want to stick around.
Second, maybe by leaving their posts it forces the government to deal with the situation rather than pretending it isn't happening.

I'd say high-powered paintball or beanbag guns are a good compromise.

If you want to know where a lot of the illegal weapons and drugs are coming into Canada from, its that area right there.
The Warrier's society is really no better then the Hells Angels

A visual . . . .
And . . . . . maybe it has more to do with a proposed expansion of the customs facility than the guns . . . a story from a few days ago. Interesting the USA recently expanded their customs facility.
