Do you have a link for a complete list? The list I saw did not include Granlund among the not-qualified players.

Now if only he wouldn't trade away all of our second round picks.

Granlund begat Shinkaruk who begat Rychel ... None were qualified.
You have to think Granlund will land an NHL deal somewhere. The other two will likely have to settle for a two-way at best.

Worst trade Treliving ever made was money to Gulutzan for coaching services.

Ha. Says GM who likes the phrase “you can never have too many goalies”. Tells you how bad Mason has been.

The Smith pick was bad. The Lazar trade was also bad, but it happens.
Nobody should ever lose a moment's sleep over taking Mason McDonald ahead of Thatcher Demko. Neither is going to the Hall.
|
Who is losing any sleep over this? A poster made a comment about Lazar trade being Treliving's worst trade and I just noted it wasn't the biggest even the biggest mistake regarding the list of players not qualified and what does the hall of fame have to do with anything? NHL average at this point would be a dream scenario for the Flames. The Flames are basically dumpster diving in free agency looking at guys like Talbot coming of a sub-.900 SV%. Demko is a legit NHL prospect better than anything the Flames have in their system. Flames could have had him for the price of a pick they used on a guy they didn't qualify yesterday. If you go back to that draft thread there were people here that weren't happy at taking McDonald over Demko but it is what it is and it's perfectly fine to discuss this in a thread regarding McDonald not getting qualified. The 2014 draft was beyond abysmal for the Flames but I give Treliving a mulligan on that seeing he wasn't really with the organization that long and I have to think Burke maybe had his fingerprints on the Smith pick.

Every team has draft misses. In fact, they occur every single year.
What is different about the Lazar trade is that he had already showed ample signs of being a big miss, but Flames still gave up a valuable asset to acquire him. It has probably been discussed to death at this point.

How valuable is pretty unknown at this point. No one between 47 and 108 has played much. You'd need to see Calgary's list of players between Salo and Ruzicka to make any assessment too.

That's not how I would value any draft pick, trying to guess who we would have picked. Way too many variables, including trading up, down etc.
If the goal was to trade a pick for more immediate help, the Lazar trade didn't work.

I think it's valid to consider how far ahead the Flames would have been if they didn't trade the pick. Trading up or down, or trading the pick for someone else have to be considered. But so far, that second round is kind of a dud. So that affects hindsight value IMO.

The goal was to trade for a young player with potential who had been mismanaged and had struggled with injury concerns. It was a gamble just like all draft picks are. I don’t think it was a considerably worse gamble than just picking but apparently a lot of people around here like to hate on that trade.
