Why are the Canucks trading firsts? Weird.

Give up a first in a cap dump? I like Miller a lot but no way I do that on a rebuilding team?

Yikes. The Canucks will still be in trouble next season too. It's not like delaying the first round pick by a year really helps them much, beyond the fact it's delayed a year.
The other issue with these 'conditional 1sts' is that it more or less ties up a trading chip, should they want to use it in the future. This summer/season, they can't trade either 2020 or 2021 first round pick, until it's confirmed which pick they have traded away.

This is not a cap dump trade really. Lightning getting good value for a good player.
Some very cool deals so far today.

That could easily turn into a 2021 first over-all.

With the protection I like the deal, hes a 50 point top 6 winger, on a good deal and for term, only 26 too
Hes also an analytics guy, an article on the athletic last week listed him as a guy the Canucks should go after as his playmaking shows up really well in the fancy stats
This isnt a cap dump

47pts in 75 games is not a cap dump.

It seems the Canucks think that the rebuild is just about over.
Petterson, Horvat, Beoser. Re-signing Edler. Now adding Miller.
Theyre amassing some good players, but they really need to keep stockpiling on Defence. Thats a pretty big weakness.
Oh, and VAN=NG

If that happens, and they miss again in 2021 (entirely possible), that's a lotto pick for JT Miller... from a rebuilding team that realistically is 2-3 years out. I think best case scenario for the nucks, that pick turns out to be 15-20OA in 2021. It also has potential of being a total disaster if it wins the lottery in 2021. Risky move by a GM probably being pressured from above. I would hate this if I was a Van fan. Miller's a good player but not the missing piece for a middling team.

I still love this deal, the pick is protected and by 2021 the Canucks should be a playoff team with Petersson and Hughes leading the way.

I think the player is fine but the price is too steep as this is a steal for the Lightning. Canucks are trying to accelerate the rebuild here and I wouldn't be happy if I was a fan as shortcutting rebuilds usually leads to mediocrity.

Yep and Backlund is ideally a 3rd line center on a contending team so steep price to pay for sure.
