Great trade for the canes depending on the conditions of the first round pick.

Marleau had to agree to this so i assume the Canes will buy him out and allow him to go to SJ.

In exchange they get a 1st next year.

As a 35+ contract the Canes get no cap relief from buying him out, so the price to do so had to be steep. Buying him out just gets them out of the contract.

If CapFriendly's numbers are right, because he signed a multiyear +35 contract, the Hurricanes are going to have to carry his full cap hit this season. Also, because he has a $3 million signing bonus due on July 1, it's going to cost the Canes $3.83 million in real money to buy him out.

one year of cap relief got Carolina a 1st? Think Edmonton has a long way to go to get rid of that Lucic contract. Pujarvi(sp?) is not enough of a sweetner.

Precedent for a James Neal trade?

Condition on first is if it is Top 10 — shifts to 2021

Moving Neal would cost way more

Canes are done with Marleau on their books by the time they use that draft pick. Huge win for them

I agree, probably would have to add in the Neal scenario as Marleau had fewer years left and is currently a better player.

I'm convinced Dubas isn't a great GM.

so the Leafs get 8th pick next year and then Carolina gets top 3 in 2021?

Because the cost of a buyout is so high, I wonder if Carolina might instead flip him to San Jose with salary retained?

If they retained 50%, it would cost them less in both cap hit and real money than buying him out. Would the Sharks pay him less than $3.125 million on a new deal?

According to Capfriendly because it's a 35+ age contract there is zero cap relief. This is the third year of his three year contract. Marleau is due to be paid 4.25 million this season but a large portion of that (3 million) is in a signing bonus that has to be paid out July 1st.

No cap relief and you owe the guy three million July 1st? That's a tough contract to get out of. Not really a precedent for other potential cap moves either IMO.

So dundun will pay $4mm for a late 1st round roll of the dice but won’t pay Faulk and/or maybe Aho?

Note -- this is full salary being dumped. I imagine the Neal possibilities that Treliving would be exploring might involve the Flames adding slightly to Neal to get a better, but still not ideal, contract
