Icon48 BOG approves expanded video review/coaches challenge

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Details on expanded video review/coaches challenge/officiating modifications that have been approved by Competition Committee and today by NHL B of G are sketchy because GMs need to hear/sign off tomorrow in VAN, but here’s some of what we’re hearing:

Referees would be permitted to check their own work by viewing monitor at penalty box after they’ve assessed a major penalty or a double minor and, if necessary, amend/rescind or uphold the call

Coaches challenge for video review would be expanded to include ability to challenge missed calls that lead to tainted goals — uncalled illegal hand pass (Meier to Karlsson); uncalled high-sticking of puck to a teammate; uncalled puck hitting the out-of-play protective netting.

Not 100 per cent certain of this but I believe a failed challenge in these instances would result in a minor penalty, same as the current rule for coaches’ challenge on offside. If so, that would limit volume of challenges and eliminate frivolous challenges.

Again, just a guess, but I would think these new video review challenge criteria would become an automatic review by Hockey Ops situation room if in final minute of a game or in overtime.

Finally, none of this is 100 per firm/official until after the GMs deal with it in their meeting tomorrow in Vancouver.

I hope they have the sense this time to put a time limit on those challenges or some other criteria so they're not rewinding every play ad infinitum until they find some stupid reason to take a goal off the board.

I'm guessing it will have to be within two assist touches prior to the goal.

That would be the logical solution ... so don't count on it.

The tradeoff should have been to eliminate the useless offside video review, or at least limit it to one overhead camera so that only obvious errors are overturned.

Man, they are missing the low hanging fruit - missed high sticking (and bad high sticking calls). That's the call I see blown most, and the one easiest to resolve through replay.

Hey, remember back in 2015 when some media guy tried to start controversy because Jones appeared to hit the puck with a high stick prior to Russell's GWG in Game One against Vancouver?

Now, that would potentially be reviewable. Does anyone want that?

I hope they have some of these reviews during TV timeouts or some games are going to be painful.

Are they going to be using cameras better than 480i 15fps? Because that would help...

No. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 1's on Saddledome Telus wi-fi can't play anything more than that.

Maybe clear the screens of all of the fingerprints too.

Video review should be done off ice, with no input from refs, by a guy with decent equipment. It can be done in 30 seconds. I'd go for one on ice official, one in the booth with video equipment - he sees something wrong, looks at it, calls it in - boom. No need for challenges, just another official making a call.

Of course the NHL is going to do this in the way that wastes as much time and sucks as much life out of the game as possible.

This is terrible. We need less reviews, not more.

Everybody: Video review sucks

NHL: expands it

Typical. So typical. Video review is absolutely terrible. I would much rather put up with 1-2 egregious human errors on offsides per year than waste more time reviewing trivial things.

How are people surprised about the expanded review?

After the blown major in the SJ/VGS series, the blown offsides call in the SJ/COL series, and the blown hand pass in the SJ/STL series, this was guaranteed to be coming.

This isn't going to backfire like literally every other coaches' challenge situation pro leagues have implemented over the last few years has...
