Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I do feel bad for my neighbor who now has a bunch of paint on his shingles. I'm guessing there's about 15-20 individual shingles that would need to be replaced. But is that even possible? Don't they come in big sections, not individual shingles?

And while I do feel bad for him, I don't necessarily feel I should be held responsible, either. My neigbhors on the right and I had an agreement they would paint the exterior of my house. They then brought in a family friend who caused the damage. I still have not been able to speak to them about this, they haven't been home. Perhaps they are willing to accept responsibility.

Is anyone here a roofer? How much would it cost to replace 15-20 shingles?

I have to say you paying for their roof for the return of them painting your exterior is a fantastic deal for your neighbor especially seeing they used a family friend to do some of it I imagine on the cheap. I it should be on them to rectify this issue to the satisfaction of your other neighbor. I'm trying to figure out how he dripped all this paint. Did he have a spill that he didn't clean up properly or was he just slopping paint on the sides of your house?

I would just burn the whole complex to the ground. Problem solved.

It's pretty easy, and ya, you can replace one tab of a shingle. They come in 3 tabs, if these are not the architectural ones.

This video shows the procedure.

A roofer could probably do it fairly quickly.

What has the painter’s response been?

I’m guessing because this was a “family friend job” that there is no insurance and it was a cash deal. But at the end of the day, a contractor working on your home caused damage to a third party and either the contractor pays, their insurance pays, you pay or your insurance pays. Your other neighbor doesn’t really figure into the equation, but if they’ll accept responsibility and pay, that’s good news.

As for the cost to replace, a roofing company might be able to give you a ballpark over the phone.

I haven't talked to my other neighbors or the painter they brought in to paint the exterior.

And I do agree with you. This was likely a cash job for a friend who was just doing some side work. If I had to guess, I don't think the painter had any insurance. But I could be wrong' I'll find out.

But if my neighbors hired someone to do the paint job, even though he was a family friend, I am unsure of where the duty of care lies. My obvious inclination would be to say the painter. But if he has no liability insurance and is unwilling to cover and repair costs, then who will?

Oh, and there are only, I think 2 or 3 shingle manufacturers in the area, and they all make the same colours so if he complains about colour matching it shouldn't be much of an issue.

I've had a few sections replaced from wind damage. Between $100-300 each visit. And yeah, they'll replace a section, not a single shingle, AFAIK.
