Kuznetsov was the youngest player in NCAA Division 1 hockey last season, 11 points (2g/9a) in 34 games at UConn as a 17-year-old.

Won gold at the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, was named a tournament all-star.

"Smart and understands how to play in all areas of the game. Uses size to gain advantages and is competitive with a presence. Moves puck very well and is poised. Solid player who's not flashy." -- TSN's Craig Button

He is a mobile and physical defenseman who possesses solid skating abilities, and likes to use his 6’3” frame to his advantage. While his offensive game is still growing, he has smooth hands and likes to jump up on the play. His defensive game is strong and he always has an active stick. He combines his body plus skating to create turnovers and break up plays. Kuznetsov works very well on the penalty kill and does a good job of getting the puck out of the zone. He is strong in front of the net and likes to use his big frame to knock players off their feet.

TSN listed Esa Lindell as a comparable type D-man.

I have strong opinions about this. I'll let you know what they are in 5 years.

Kind of thought they might go Poirier but not shocked it's Kuznetsov.

Not the highest offensive upside it seems but he's one of the youngest d-men to play in the NCAA in the last 20 years...only 8 17 year old d-men have played in the NCAA in that time and 11 points as a 17 year old rookie in the NCAA really isn't that bad.

Hate this pick a lot. If he pans out, which is a big if, he becomes a player that is pretty easy to find through other avenues

Screams of Kanzig, Sieloff, Wotherspoon picks. Fingers crossed he becomes a bottom pair guy I guess

Kuznetsov was the youngest player in the NCAA this year per Aaron Vickers.

A quick read on the reports tells me he is a very defensive defenseman, but should be very good in his own end. Quick stick, good position, able to muscle guys off pucks and away from the front of the net. Has top 4 potential.

He's not going to add a lot of offense, but if he can play an exceptional defensive game, I'm good with this pick at #50.

Or he becomes Zdeno Chara

who really knows.

I haven't really looked at his numbers mind you. No idea who he is.

“The 17-year-old Russian is arguably one of the best defensive players in this draft class. He uses his stick well, easily stripping the puck from opponents and uses both his stick and his body to move traffic from the front of the net. He’s extremely intelligent and poised, something that is a rarity for defensemen heading into the draft.” – Josh Bell, The Hockey Writers

I don't care about size as long as these guys are good skaters.

The bread and butter of Kuznetsov’s game is in the defensive end of the ice. He uses his strong lateral mobility and backwards skating to maintain excellent gap control. Kuznetsov forces defenders to the outside and away from good shooting areas. If attackers don’t keep their heads up, he can explode into a hit. He also uses his active stick to knock the puck away from opponents. Kuznetsov stays close and puts pressure on attackers. He is also strong on the boards, fighting for loose pucks, pinning his man, and winning his battles. As Kuznetsov continues to mature, he should get stronger and be even more effective in this area of his game. His ability to move the puck out of the zone and transition up the ice helps to minimize the amount of time that opponents spend in his end of the ice.

Kuznetsov does a good job of containing his man in the cycle. He keeps him on the perimeter and cuts down the passing lanes to the middle of the ice. Kuznetsov is also strong away from the puck. He clears the front of the net and uses his size to his advantage. This is another area where he should get even better with maturity. Kuznetsov is a smart player. He reads the play well and anticipates what opponents are going to do, helping him to get to the right spot. Kuznetsov is also willing to put his body on the line and block shots.

Not really good value either.
Why does he have no offensive upside? 11 pts as a 17-year-old in the NCAA? 2nd in points for defenders on the team. On an average team.

sounds like he's a pretty good skater though, so that will help a lot, even with much offensive flair (at this point in his development at least)

Amazingly Pronman had the Flames taking Kuznetsov at 50 in his mock draft.
