Default downloads freezing

I've been trying to download some programs on my parents computer and when i start downloading the files It seems to freeze pretty quickly. No matter how long i leave it it just doesn't advance any further.

They are using IE and I have taken Norton off thier computer. Apparantly it's been doing it for sometime. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks

1. Did you use the Norton removal tool?
2. Do you have ZoneAlarm installed? Mine has been killing my internet connection every time I tried to download something using utorrent.

I highly doubt you're parents would notice much. Firefox looks nearly identical to IE6 in it's default configuration. Transfer the bookmarks over and they would be all set. Firefox would likely be the ideal solution.

If you are insistentent on an IE solution, do a google search for download managers. It's been years since I've had to use one, but I do remember they helped with that problem for me.

Other things to check:
Dial - up: spend extra couple bucks a month to get cable/dsl.
Cable/DSL: Re-initialize your connection from the modem. Lease a new IP (restarting everything, including the modem should do that for you). Ensure that there isn't a misbehaving firewall (hardware or software) inbetween.

Update the OS software to the latest editions. Finally, ensure that the network/modem drivers are the latest releases as well.

Or just install Firefox for your own use and leave IE as the default browser.

don't you actually have to download the program? that's the problem I can't download anything. The simplest download get's caught up practically right away and thus I can't get anywhere.

Anyhow I guess I'll just try some of the recommendations when I get back but I have a feeling it's just not going to work

That's a good point, though that would be true of any of these programs.

You could use FTP to download firefox from releases.mozilla.org under /pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0.0.11/win32/en-US/

And if you are nervous about installing it, how about Portable Firefox. It installs on (and runs off of) any portable drive. I use it when I took classes at Sait. Then I had all my bookmarks, cookies, etc with me.

That will also tell you if it is an IE issue or if it is something else.
