Wait until your 80+ yrs old. I'm pretty sure that's the minimum age for this hobby.

Other than that, you're good to go!

My grandfather had one in his 60s. You're good to go around that age too.

All joking aside, it can be a lot of fun. Especially around busy parks, beaches, etc.

My grandfather had me using it around his farm, collecting nails and screws so the tires on his machinery wouldn't get flats.

Watch the show Detectorists on Netflix. It's a British comedy and shows the "glamorous" side of the detecting hobby.

I will be joining you soon enough. I am not listening to another story of some dummy finding a stash of viking loot. That dummy sure as hell is going to be me.

I have been in and out of the metal detecting community since I was a kid. The big hurdle in Canada is if you buy a high end detector that filters out garbage, that will filter out Canadian coins. Canada also has a very short history, so there is not much to find, compared to Europe or even compared to the States.

I recently found a ring buried in the ground near Okotoks, but finds like that in Canada are normally found in parks or beaches.
