Where to buy a new laptop??
I need to purchase a new laptop.
My needs are fairly generic... just web stuff, spreadsheets, word documents. No gaming needs. Some movie watching etc.
Suggestions please?

Get a Dell Entry level laptop. Make sure it is on sale.
Something like one of these:
15"

13.3"
http://configure.dell.com/dellstore/...bsd&cs=cabsdt1
I just randomly pulled 2 that seemed like a reasonable value, but poke around. Either the Inspiron or Vostro models would be fine, just depending on what is on sale.

I just got this one for the mother in law, not sure if its a better value than the Dell, but a fair value for price:

Edit: Oh and if you get one of these cheap laptops, get a $100 SSD and $20 USB 3.0 enclosure for the hard drive that came with it. Totally worth it, and best upgrade you will do.

My Asus is 8 years old and still going strong. I highly recommend this brand. The Memory Express on 32nd has a lot of their laptops out on display and lots of knowledgable and helpful staff.
A solid state drive is worth the money too.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions. I like the Dell option... but am too impatient to wait for a week!
I'll check out Memory Express and the other big-box chains.
Glad to see good reviews for the Asus brand as well.

If you wait long enough it will drop significantly during one of their deals, probably as they are trying to blow out old tech for a new upgraded version.

I actually just noticed that it was a Day of Deals yesterday, so today the sale price is no longer a good one, and I don't recall the exact price it was yesterday, but with 6GB of RAM and a 3rd Gen i3 processor, anything much cheaper than $450 would be a very good deal.
You are right though, if I am understanding you correctly, make sure what you are buying is on sale because if it isn't there is a similar laptop available that is on sale, or will be in the next while, and a better value.

edit: put this first as you have to read it! Find the model you want and check Shopbot.ca. The best deals are online, do not buy in a store! I'm not being pushy, I don't want you to spend twice as much for something half as good. Shopbot finds the best prices in all of Canada.

I suggest this, I got one, it's a beast. Downloaded Advanced System Care 6 and it maxes out brand new games like Planetside 2 and Assassins Creed 3. Best deal around.

that's more bare bones, $600. Just don't get a Dell, they are the Fender Squire of computers. I've built my own computers, done programming language and one thing I've learned is that Dell computers are garbage. They get by with commercials and clever branding, but they are most definitely garbage.

Outside of the Apple store and Memory Express, I have not found a local big box store that will carry new laptops with the English keyboard. I don't know if this is a concern to you but I could never get used to the small shift key and the tetris shaped return key. I found I made a substantially more typo's while using the French keyboard. I guess I'm not used to those extra keys they have.
If you see a laptop in town that you like and it has the French keyboard, try typing on it for a few minutes to see if the extra keys on a French keyboard causes you any problems.

You can contact the manufacturer and get an English keyboard. At least I was able to for 15 Toshiba tecras.
