Meet the Hutterites
http://channel.nationalgeographic.co...he-hutterites/
Probably lots of people on here that know Hutterites and will probably be surprised with some of the stuff portrayed on here by a colony that to me was just trying to get attention and make a name.
I have a vested interest in this, so if you have any questions feel free to ask.
I especially like the part where they said the Hutterites have never been filmed. There are black and white movies about the Hutterites that are showcased at a museum in Calgary that I can't remember the name of.
Quite obvious to me that NatGeo never did proper research.

This article in the local newspaper said that this very colony has been filmed before by CBC. NatGeo must be using a bit of artistic license.
Quote:
The inner workings of Hutterite colonies, especially the King Colony, have rarely been filmed or photographed. Collins said that, as far as he knows, just one film -- a choppy black-and-white snippet filmed by the Canadian Broadcasting Co. in the 1930s -- of the colony exists.
The TV crew, which wrapped up filming of the first season earlier this year, gained access and trust partly because National Geographic did a feature on the colony about 40 years ago and followed up on it 10 years ago.

I have the series recording on my DVR, looking forward to watching it this weekend.

Personally, I want them to confirm/deny the urban legends about how they bring new blood to the colony...

My dad is a vet. He has a lot of hutterite clients. Our family actually has some hutterites in our past. Anyways, at his retirment party the guys from the colony were there and having a good old time and then they saw my brother, a strapping lad of 6'3 and the jokes started flying about bringing him in and helping to improve the gene pool. He just wanted to know what it paid. All in jokes but who knows.
Also, I knew another guy that was off the colony and decided to go back, which was really weird because he was pretty wild. Anyways, before he went back he took his ski-doo out for another rip, in July. As a ten year old that blew my mind. Maybe it is common but seemed totally bizarre at the time.

Interesting. My family has close ties to a Hutterite colony in Manitoba - they just bought our farm after renting the land for about 15 years, plus my mom taught at the colony for over 10 years. Most of the people on that colony are the most generous and welcoming people you'll ever meet, of course you have a few bad apples among the bunch.

I think NatGeo did books or something on certain colonies in that area as well. There is also a film called 'How to Get to Heaven in Montana' that was done a few years on Flatwillow Colony in that area as well.
There are also films on various colonies in Alberta, and BBC was recently filming at a couple colonies in Manitoba.
So the Hutterites have been show-cased numerous times.

I've heard the rumors too, but have never been able to actually say with 100% honesty that it isn't true.
I know for a fact that a lot of bizarre stuff happens at certain colonies, so I wouldn't really be surprised.
And it is something I would love to be able to deny. But I can't.

Can I ask which colony? Chances are I might know them as well.
My problem with the NatGeo feature is that it looks staged and sheer entertainment. That, plus they literally picked out the bottom of the barrel amongst the colonies to do a feature on.
The way they portray life on the colony isn't 100% accurate, and a lot of people will walk away thinking it is like that.

I think this proposition sounds a lot better than the reality of the situation.
This is a second hand story, but I once heard a description of what actually happens. The women are unkept, husky, and usually have genetic/inbreeding problems to begin with. The action occurs through a hole in sheet.
I think I'd have to be rightly sauced.

Rumour has it that there is a witness there to make sure you follow the rules.
Again though, all I have ever heard is rumours and friend of a friend stories.

Is this service available on weekends after 1 AM when I've struck out otherwise?

Heh, apparently those rumors cross borders. We hear the same stories down here.
The only real experience I've had with Hutterites has been asking for permission to hunt on their land (no sexytime), drinking with a couple young, attractive ladies at the local tavern in small town, Montana (again, no sexytime), buying one of their fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving, and dealing with them while working at Home Depot in my university days.
All of my experiences have been generally good, so I tend to take extremely negative stories with a grain of salt.

I've heard many of them as well. During school I would often get asked if the stories are true. Like I said, a lot of bizarre stuff happens at many colonies, especially those that fail to keep up with the times, which would usually be the Lehrerleut sect.

Sometimes, the Co-op will have a sign up that says "Fresh Hutterite Chickens Available", and I always wonder how they know what religion they were.

So you're saying that sexy time did occur with the Turkey and the tools?

All my dealings with them have been less than impressive.
I have found them to be less than truthful, and boardering on out and out thievery.

When my mom was a little girl, her and her family were driving out in the country when their car broke down on some back road. A group of Hutterites saw them and invited them to stay for supper while a tow truck was fetched by a group of men who rode into a nearby town. Since then, they have been considered our friends and my grandma still drives to their colony every summer to buy produce from them.

I think there were some Hutterites out by Acme that made the greatest goddamn penut butter pie known to man. I think that was the Hutterites, anyway.
Used to see them from time to time when I lived in Crossfield. Friendly folk.
And add me to the list of people who have heard the rumours about them needing outside sources to mix up the gene pool.

They did recommend some special gloves to hang on to the turkey. I must admit, I've never made better gravy, so creamy.
