Hate to break the lore nitpick and talk about the film Wonder Woman

I think it was okay in a good way. I would say this movie suffered a bit from being such a late entry into the superhero game. Marvel has already mostly moved on to variations on superhero themes, so this felt slightly dated to me. That said, creating by-the-numbers entertainment that's actually entertaining can be hard even without the kind of extra scrutiny this film was under, so I think the creative team deserve a lot of credit.

Since I didn't really like Nolans Batman, I think this was my favourite DC film. It was also the first film where I felt DC's style could really be called artistic preferences instead of just being inferior to what Marvel has been doing. DC has generally been more about pathos and symbolism in comparison to Marvels more character driven stories. Marvels style appeals to me a LOT more, but here I can appreciate what they did and call the rest a matter of taste. (Captain America does high level symbolism better though.)

In general it's nice to see DC do something right for a change, since they're not going to stop making movies The box office success of WW heavily suggest we'll get sequels, so this will likely be the third commercially successful action franchise in recent years with a female lead. (Other two being the new Star Wars trilogy and Hunger Games. Feel free to add Mad Max to that, especially considering the talk about a possible Furiosa sequel.) Should put to rest the theory that female leads don't sell.

Random technical commentary:

I liked the script a lot on the concept level, although but the dialog could have used a few more really good lines. The main pair was a little lifeless and I think that's more on the script than the actors. Pacing was good, supporting characters were good.

I didn't like the way the action was directed, but again I'm sure that's a matter of taste. To me the constant switching from slo-mo to regular/fast pace in action scenes was jarring to the point of annoyance. I liked the visual effects otherwise. Use of colour was boring as hell, but that's a general problem with big budget action these days, so would be unfair to pick on this movie specifically. Still want to complain about it.

Overall this was a fun if a bit unremarkable piece of superhero entertainment.

...EDIT:
On the topic of recent commercially successful action franchises with a female lead, I guess I should add the Underworld series and the Resident Evil series. Obviously they're not punching in the same weight class, but both apparently make money considering the amount of films they've made.

...After checking the numbers, woah. Resident Evil series has made $1.2bn on a combined budget of $290M. That's good business.

I had been talking a bit to my wife about this. Resident Evil and Underworld are considered 'action' movies and not 'superhero' movies, apparently. Female superhero movies have apparently performed abysmally, which is (at least part) of the reason studios take less chance on them than they do on female 'action' movies.

The whole female superhero thing needs to be looked at in context though. Look at the list of female superhero movies:

Supergirl
Tank Girl
Barbwire
Tomb Raider?
Aeon Flux
Catwoman
Elektra
Sucker Punch?

Meanwhile, the X-Men movies have always featured prominent women, something the Avengers franchise has continued.

I was quite surprised by how many people seemed uncertain that boys/men would be willing to watch a female superhero. It's not like they made Sex and the City into superheroes. WW is a prominent hero and when the trailer looked good and positive reviews followed, it shouldn't be surprised that fans of comic book movies went to see it.

Frankly I'm surprised the combination of sex appeal and badassery aimed at a more neutral audience wasn't put to film sooner. Most of the previous female superhero type movies were exploitative or geared primarily to a younger female demographic.

I'd love to see something like Danger Girl adapted. It is a little heavy on the exploitation angle but is meant to be a lighthearted parody or homage to the genre, among others.

The splits for WW were 50/50 compared to typical superhero fair at 60/40. So either more women or less men came out for this.

Ultimately that won't matter much. Money is money and the film is a success.

Yup. That's why I talked about action franchises and recent years.

The success of Resident Evil and Underworld likely softened the ground for female leads in action blockbusters in general. I would also imagine they're targeted largely for the same demographic as superhero films.

IMO the idea that female superheroes don't sell was always mostly an example of how incredibly stupid studios can be. Or the people in charge never watched any of those films.

Scarlett Johansson leading a film as Black Widow was just an opportunity missed.

I thought it was weird how Wonderwoman looked hotter when she wasn't wearing her costume.

I was fine with the hidden island inhabited only by immortal women, but a Fokker Eindecker still flying, with German markings, in latter 1918? Might as well have been flying a unicorn.

PS: I realize it was probably done so you could get a better view of Chris Pine "flying" it, since it had a fully exposed cockpit perfect for the shot they wanted, but still. Swatting away bullets with a bronze shield, ok, but an Eindecker?!?!?

Anyone else get really annoyed at how hard it was to watch in 3D? They really need to find a way to brighten up the screen for these. All the night shots were almost impossible to watch.

I thought the film was really good otherwise.

If the movie is too dim even with 3D glasses, it's likely not the studio's fault but rather with the movie theatre not maintaining their equipment well enough or management being too cheap and not replacing their bulbs sufficiently frequently. Could also be due to the fact they have teenagers responsible for these projectors now. Anyway, you should either complain to customer service or refuse to patronize the movie house if the movie is too dim for you to enjoy the film.

I do find the UltraAVX 3D presentations to be brighter than the normal 3D presentations at a given Cineplex location. I think it's a way to compel customers to pony up more money for the "premium" experience even though both presentations should be projected at the same brightness.

I'm kind of with you. It's better than BvS and SS, but pretty much being a coherent film will do that on its own. I think the major flaw to the movie was a weak villian with pretty much no backstory, no development... etc...

They did a great job with realizing the WW character, which is not easy. But when you have a standard good guy vs bad guy story, your bad guy needs to be almost equally awesome. It's why a film like Casino Royale worked so well.
