I did some digging into the different shows/movies available on US and Canada, and I will say Canada has gotten alot better. Enough so that i felt me trying to get the US netflix didn't justify the time anymore.
On topic, I signed up for shomi yesterday. I have a Roku and PS3 so I am hoping they come on line soon, but I couldnt pass up the 2 month trial.
It seems to me that there are quite a few good TV shows that I have been dying to see from the beginning (all FX shows): The Americans, Justified, Always Sunny, Fargo, etc.
Plus, the more subscribers the better impetus to attract more content, ala Canadian Netflix

And Shomi is pulling the plug as of Nov 30.
I guess Crave & Netflix are the winners.

Huh, there was a couple of shows I wanted to watch that were on shomi but not on Crave or Netflix, guess I'll either have to get a trial and binge watch or hope those shows get picked up by the others.

Netflix is a winner. I would be surprised if Crave survives for very long.
The majors in Canada should probably all join forces to put together a single entity that goes up against Netflix. I would probably sign up for that. As it is now, the programming licenses are distributed such that there are a few programs on Crave that I would want to watch and a few programs on Shomi but I don't feel compelled to sign up for either.

Then I got a bunch of shows I need to binge-watch through to conclusion. The Americans, Vikings, Fargo.

Crave has the license for all the HBO shows. I was hesitant to sign up while still paying for Shomi, but now I'll probably use my Shomi money for Crave and watch (or re-watch) the Sopranos and the Wire.
It will suck if all we're left with is Netflix.

Care to explain why?
Netflix has shown they'll scoop up available shows.

In this case we are better off without competition at least short term as competition for content drives up cost for consumers when you need six different services to watch the shows you want.

Looks like we'll all be pirating The Grand Tour like we used to with Top Gear in the old days.

Rogers and Shaw still own the rights to the content. Bell would have to buy those licenses from them, or the three would have to partner up on it.

Do they? With the company ceasing operations, I have no idea what the wording in the licenses would be with regards to what happens to the license rights.

Shomi had better movies than Netflix imo. May not have had as many, but it had more re-watchable, enjoyable movies.

I'm not confident Netflix will splash out the money to buy up Canadian rights to the entire HBO catalog, etc. I would be happily surprised if they did, but I'm not holding my breath.

Why don't you just order it through your cable package?

Different things. HBO go and Telus on demand and the like only have current HBO shows.
Crave owns the rights to all past HBO shows.
Edit: responding to flash.

Shomi's lack of 5.1 content was what killed it for me. Sure it was nice to have some shows that I couldn't get on Netflix, but having to watch them in (ugh) stereo was a real step back.

Figured you were an old-fart paying 200+ for internet, cable and landline w/ fax.
