Default Ubuntu Laptop
I'm looking to buy a laptop which I will be running Ubuntu gutsy gibbon on. The laptop is essentially for school and a workshop for playing around with open source software. How's the compatibility between Ubuntu and most laptops? Any brands I should avoid? Any you would recomend? Thanks for any input.

Most laptops are pretty good now with Ubuntu, older models are usually better, as it gives time for drivers to mature a little, and problems to be solved. Nvidia video chipset will give you the least grief getting started. Best bet is to find a Laptop to buy then research any issues with it and Ubuntu before you buy it. The really popular Dells, usually have alot of support.

Make sure any potential laptop you get has a compatible wireless card and sound card. A little while ago I read about people having problems with hp pavilion laptops and ubuntu. Mostly due to no Intel HD audio driver support, or a unsupported wireless card. Driver support has gotten a lot better, and a lot easier to install in gutsy.

I installed it on a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop, everything works out of the box with Gutsy.
